Called out vet to 26 yo mare. Mare needed to be sedated and vet had problem finding vein and twiddled around for quite a while - mare became somewhat agitated. Was told to leave her stabled for around an hour - nil by mouth! Checked her regularly and she was fine. Turned her out and she was back to normal and went off to graze. About an hour or so later she came back into the yard and stood in the school. She seemed very subdued and unresponsive - watched her carefully but thought she was just a little tired. She then went into her stable and laydown. Her breathing was quite laboured and she closed her eyes and put her head down and began whinnying. This continued for several minutes (had called vet out again). After 20 mins she got up and was back to normal!!!
Vet No.2 thought it was stress colic (NO normal colic symptoms).
Here's my question: Could the twiddling about finding a vein have caused some of the sedative to go where it shouldn't and then cause delayed re-sedation a couple of hours later?
