my friends old 32 yr old horse slipped over in field late pm yesterday (dark time), few of us went to help, i called firebrigade who got their unimog to come out and winch the horse up, vet was there as well, winched up horse freaked and they got her down v quickly. at this point i could not watch and then said to my friend are you sure you want to put your horse through this stress. we carried on up on the winch, back legs by this time had pretty much lost there use. short of the horse panicking again which got some of the circulation back the horse ended up walking gingerly up the field. im not sure i could have done that to my old horse. i know we each make our own decisions about these things but the owner is on about putting the horse out in the field again.

i dont see a problem, the horse wasn't in a position when you had to put her to sleep, she survived it well. i wouldnt put my horse to sleep if that was him.

Personnally no, but I wasn't there and don't know the horse, so it would be unfair to comment as to whether your friend was right or wrong.

Depends on whether it had happened before, how stiff he is usually etc etc. I don't really think about the age of horses, I know 30 year old horses that are ridden and pulling, I also know 20 year horses that are stiff and decrepid! Your friend knows her horse best and ultimately any decision has to be hers.

Your friend did what she thought was right. Why not give her your support rather than posting things like this on a forum? If it was my horse, and I saw this post I'd be very upset!

I'd do the same thing if my horse went down.

its a very difficult thing when your beloved equine is getting on a bit, i guess you always want to give them another day and if the horse is not suffering then i would also have done the same thing,it s tricky i know.

I am sure that the vet would have indicated to your friend if he thought the horse was suffering.

My neighbours horse went own in its stable and could not get up so I called Fire and Rescue and the vet and he survived another 6 month.

You did well to help her out and I am sure that she will appreciate your support.

It's always tricky to comment on other people and opinions. If the horse hasn't suffered then i think it's only fair to give it a chance. If it was a regular occurance then it may be time for the owner to think differently, but if the horse is fine in itself and happy then i think it's sad to end it's days for one occurance. This time of year is awful, i think as long as he is warm, happy and has a good quality of life he will be fine. Spring is just around the corner!!
Vet would have surely said if he thought the animal was suffering at all.
I'm sure your friend appreciates what you did for her old lad. Don't be too hard on her for making her decision, we don't know how we would react if it was our own horse in this situation.
