Schooling ebs in a snaffle :o but she has a single jointed happy mouth? and she gets hold of it and chews on the rubber and its really annoying when your trying to get on with schooling etc, so could someone please recomend a simple snaffle that she wont chew or try and get hold off? :) thank you

See if you can borrow some bits from friends and see what works for both of you :)

Agree with this. :) I borrowed a few different bits when I first had my mare and it saved alot of money as I was able to try them and then go out and buy only the one that she went best in. :D

If shes patt welsh she might have a very fleshy mouth if this is the case, try her in a french link loose ring or maybe a thinner bit. I'm not a big fan of single jointed bits tbh and if she likes the french link on her gag might be worth a try :)

Neue Schule do some basic lozenge snaffles. They use a special metal which warms up much quicker than steel. They are a bit more expensive than a bog standard steel snaffle (£40 ish) but well worth the extra money. You can try them from the bit bank I think (or any other bit) if you're not sure. The bit bank also give out good advice about which bits to try if you are really stuck. (I've never used them myself but a friend highly recommends them.)

I find double jointed snaffles better than single jointed, and the lozenge better than a french link, but very difficult to say without seeing.

My boy used to fiddle loads and generally not concentrate, open his mouth, play with the bit, etc. After a bit of trial and error we tried a drop nose band and a neue schule lozenge and he is so much better. But I know that some of the issues were me, so I've had to work really hard on that too!!

Yeah my mate was suggeting them i was like £45 a normal one is £15 :o but i guess if it works tehn its got to be worth the money, shes not that bad its just after a while she goes off track or gets bored and gets hold of it and chews :p but ill try thank you :D x

I would try a simple stainless steel snaffle with a french link or lozenge?

I don't like the nut cracker action of the single jointed snaffle. If she is part welsh then she could have a fleshy mouth and the joint could be hitting the roof of her mouth. I've also had problems with horses chewing the rubber on happy mouths and some cutting their tongues/inside of their mouths so go with stainless steel now :)

They are fairly cheap so you could try one of those before trying the more expensive neue shule ones perhaps?

I normaly borrow off other people, its a great idea :D
so the french link better than the single jointed for her mouth? :) thanks x

A french link allows for more room in the mouth as its flater, also you don't have the nutcracker action which if you think about it isn't nice for the horse. Nearly every horse I have owned prefers a french link to a single jointed bit. Depends on the horse though, but definatly worth a try.

I got a second NS on ebay, exact size I wanted to the millemetre! So if you find one you like give ebay a go. I think the bit bank thing with NS requires you to buy one in the end even if you dont like any of them..I might be wrong, check it out.

If i were you like others have said I would try some friends bits first, but i would advise going for a stainless steal french link fixed ring snaffle, Purely because the way a french link works makes it harder for a horse to bite it plus without the plastic the bit is smaller and isn't so nice to hold in the teeth, plus if the issue is that she has a sensitive mouth then the fixed ring won't rub like a loose ring would. good luck! :)

I have the Neuh Shule trans lozenge bit which my horse is happy in (very fussy in anything else) but they're not cheap.

You need to be aware that even the 'same' bit type varies between manufactures - the shape of one french link is not always the same as the shape of another and one might suit her more than another. It's therefore great if you can borrow friends to try but doesn't always mean that she's therefore like any frenchlink (if that's what you do try).

It will give you an idea if she's happier in one type of bit (single, double or no jointed etc) and then you can fine tune it. The Bit Bank would be ideal for that, so you can try before you buy.
