No my TB cannot cope Un-shod, its the worst thing i ever did. We thought it may benifit him & took them off in September. It has been a nightmare so shoes go back on Monday & i may get some sanity back. However at least i tried, my farrier is more optimistic than me, he would keep him barefoot. But he hasnt had to pay the Vet bills for Bad Bruising & Absceses. He's Absceses every month so far & Early Jan badly brusied his feet as well as 2 abscesses. Due to galloping round like a nutter.
So enoughs enough for me with Barefoot & this horse.

I have another horse totally Un-shod & he's great been Un-shod for 3 years now & never had a single problem.

Sid was crippled with out a full set of shoes but then he was a TB with the whole rotton foot thing going on.

Ru (also TB) but with better feet copes ok without backs, but I wouldn't consider having her without shoes longterm as her hoof is on the soft side and wears down quickly, she is also a little sensitive to stones.

Andy the sec A is a hard nut and is not and probably will not be shod ( YAY)
 
All of mine only have fronts during the winter and it does them the world of good as it allows there feet to harden up a bit

There 50 horses here and none have shoes on; about half of them are in light work, a quarter in regular work and a quarter are hibernating over the winter

Lou; the dictionary definition of "barefoot" is "without shoes" - hence people using the term "barefoot" for their horses is as correct as unshod - the definitions are EXACTLY the same so not sure why you are getting so excited, Lol!

Nope - My mare has very good feet, very strong - but when she wasn't shod behind after an operation, she became very footsore very quickly and we had to reshoe her - I wouldn't do it again

Yes - my cob is just trimmed every 6 weeks - sometimes its more of a reshape than a trim as we do a fair amount of road work depending on the time of year. Her feet are rock hard and she goes easily over every surface. I read somewhere that another benefit of not having shoes on is that the horse is able to regulate their body temperature more easily - anyone know anything about that? Should say the other benefit of no shoes is a £20 farrier bill instead of £56 for a set like my WB - and if she had shoes on as she did one winter it would be 4 weekly visit instead of 6 weekly!

I tried all four unshod and she wasn't 100% sound. Very footy and sore.
I then tried shoes in front only. She was ok but still sore behind, especially on stones, and her hind feet wore down so much that she was on bute for a couple of days after being eventually shod as she was very sore and a smidgen lame.
She now has four shoes on and is sound and happy

yes they could and they do. all of mine are barefoot and do work on all surfaces.

both of my farriers recommended trying barefoot with one of my girls, and was told by one of my farriers he didnt see the point to shoeing my WB as her feet are rock hard

No - I tried and failed, I guess he must have weak soles as he picked up an abcess soon afterwards and had recurrent abcesses in that foot for months afterwards, culminating in an infected pedal bone.

Seeing as he hadn't had an abcess before, and certainly hasn't since they've been put back on, I can only put it down to having his shoes off. He was also completely crippled without them, didn't want to walk at all.

I gave him time but it just didn't work, and I feel so guilty for trying unshod - saving £60 ended up costing me over £500 in vets bills
