Had a total nightmare on Friday night my horse would just not let me catch him! he was pelting around like a mad man so after nearly two hours of trying i had to give in!

So decided to have another go on Saturday morning, same thing happened all over again, but thought i can't leave it or i am never going to get him, so got some helpers and after another hour all three of us were buggered, So anyway a woman on my yard called Sue said i will come and get him for you, went in walked around for 2mins then walked straight up to him and got him!!!!

I was like what the hell!!! She was then telling me that she has been doing the natural horsemaship thing for years! i couldnt believe how she did it, it was amazing to watch. Then in the afternoon she did some work with me an my horse in the arena and he really loved it.

Does anyone else do anything like this?

My boy always sees me straight away even from several fields away and he invariably comes over to be caught. I have only just started with NH and he has only just been turned out for the first time since I've had him so I have no idea how he would react to being caught if I wasn't doing NH with him. He is very affectionate and always follows me round the field when I poo pick so I think he just likes human company!

she was showing me on Saturday afternoon, before i personally thought it was a load of crap but when she was doing it with me i totall chaged my mind! as he was been brilliant

I am enjoying doing the NH and what is even better for me is that my OH is learning it too and he feels a lot more involved with my horse now and handles him really confidently. I am not so sure about the NH riding at the moment but the groundwork is good fun and my horse seems to like it too. I am using clicker training which I thought wouldn't work but it very definitely does!

I don't follow the NH movement, but if a horse won't catch for me then I make sure I turn side on to him and avoid eye contact. If he's still playing up I go to another horse in the field, usually the dominant one and fuss over them. Soon gets them interested and they usually drop their head.

It's what works for me and tbh I've used used my common sense rather than NH books.

ive started doing ground work with NH trainer. My horse has completely changed. Shes so much more relaxed and easier to handle.
I was always sceptical about it but am a real convert to it. It has its place n training where other methods dont work.
Im really glad she got to catch your horse. I hope you managed to pick up some tips form her.

A woman on our yard went down to get a horse for someone some time ago as they couldn't catch it. She'd got him in a few minutes. Not NH, just common sense & experience.

I honestly think NH has been very cleverly marketed, taking common sense, hanging labels on things & packaging it as NH. Someone somewhere is making a very ice living

Agree with Blackhawk. although I am not a NH practicer in everyday life, I have picked up a few things on the way.

My boy is defensive of his space in the stable, same technique, go low as possible, approach side on and don't look a him. You won't be deemed a threat then.

The same as if you walk down the street and a scary youth in a hoody looks at you dead on and walks forcefully towards you, he is probably looking for his mates behind you, but it scares you, where as someone else may have their head dropped looking at their feet and you don't see them as a threat due to their body lanuage.
