County Level Showing

My younger sister, age 6, is starting to really get into her showing at the moment and we're currently going out almost every weekend with her 11.2hh Welsh A Clint and my own horse. Clint is an absolute saint with her and is really boosting her confidence. At every show they have been to they have placed 1st with the exception of one second (proud sister moment :o) Because we are only showing locally they are currently doing a mixture of either Mountain and Moorland at the smaller shows or Welsh A classes. We also mix up going on the lead rein and her going in on her own ( sometimes with me and my horse, a Welsh D in the smaller shows). There is a county level show in a few weeks that is near-ish to us and we are thinking of taking the horses (I know, we must be bonkers :D)
What sort of classes would she be able to enter in?
How would we prepare?
How are the different to local?
If doing lead rein what would I have to wear as handler? (I have just been wearing my own showing gear locally)
And just any advice really. Its all for fun at this stage as she really does just love being out with her pony! We defiantly don't expect to go away with anything

Most county shows will need pre entering and entries tend to close many weeks if not months before the show date so you need to get the schedule to see a) if you can still get in and b) what classes are suitable for you to do as they are not all the same.

If the pony is registered then there is likely to be a M&M LR which would be the best place for your sister to start off at a higher level, possibly a M&M FR, in anything else she will be in against adults and much older children and expected to canter in a group, if he is not registered you may find there is very little you can do unless he will trim up and plait to do plaited LR .

You would need to wear something that matches, blends in with your sisters tweed jacket, definitely not riding gear, smart trousers, shirt and tie to match and a nice waistcoat would be fine for you, also a neat hat should be worn, you should wear brown gloves and carry a show cane.

The entries are still open and we can go, think I'll be ordering some gear for myself tonight :D

We did one county show as LR this year and it was a great experience.

Our pony isn't reg welsh though so we weren't fortunate enough to have a choice of classes.

I wore brown cords, shirt and tie matching with childs and tweed hacking jacket but a waistcoat would have been even better.

I love showing at county level.. Much prefer it to local! The judges actually know what they're looking at and people in the classes turn out correctly. Nothing's no annoys me more than being in a reg M&M class at a local show and being placed lower than someone who is turned out totally wrong! I would rather come last in good company than second and feel hard done by :D
