And leave behind a 6 month old baby - what a tragic story.

Don't think this is the time for recriminations - RIP Darren and Laura

So sad, that poor child.

I went in after my old bitch one day (she crossed the shallow part of the river, more like a big stream, and was about to go for a loose sheep

) and got up to my knees, it was only slightly flooded but I couldn't believe how strong the water was. The dog returned to call and forgot about the sheep, but even she had trouble getting back, the adrenaline must have carried her over.

I decided that day that I would never go in again and I never will. It would break my heart to see my dog struggle but it's not worth it and in 99% of these cases it seems the dogs end up getting themselves sorted out anyway.

How very sad!
My aunt once lost a dog to the tide, he swam out and couldnt get back in.
She had to make the hearbraking decision not to go in after him (a dog she had had for over 10 years).

The one i feel sorriest for is the baby. it is never going to know its parents.

Its a terrible tragedy but I can't in all honesty say I could see my dog in trouble and not do anything. It would be such an automatic thing to go to his aid. Besides I know what i'm like, it would haunt me forever.

Oh my god that is so tragic. I have 2 dogs, and a baby, and live by the sea. This stopped me in my tracks. I do have to say, I agree with LHS, in the heat of the moment you dont think 'Im leaving my child by the side and risking my life', you think 'My poor dog/s' esp if it 'appears' easy to get to them. The guilt would certainly haunt, of leaving them to potentially drown. Jesus. I cant even think about this one. RIP poor poor family, and orphaned baby.

An awful, awful tragedy

Like others, I couldn't stand there and see my dog in trouble, it would be an instant reaction to do everything I could to save him.

Theres not only a baby but 3 other kids

Sadly, in the heat of the moment it sounds like the wife went in to get the dog and the husband went in after the wife

How utterly utterly tragic.

Its terrible.

I have to say I think the only thing that would stop me going in is my baby by my side, but then who knows what you do when faced with the situation. So desperately sad for everyone involved. One thing that baby will know is that its parents were loving and caring and selfless, which is a thing to be proud of.

A terrible terrible tragedy, but i hope it makes people think before they are ready to jump in and risk there lives.

My condolences to all there family & friends
