I have been recommended by my girl's back specialist to maybe ask for a course of bute to get rid of some acute inflammation in the saddle area (which has been a problem area for years, she has been checked out with x-rays and bone scan and nothing came up so have been using back person to maintain her and rideable as best as possible). I did change vets sincce major investigation and have not been in contact with old vets about the condition since as it was sort of manageable. I am not sure they would just prescribe me a course of bute without looking at the horse though, would they and new vets don't know of her condition in detail so they would have to do full exam first before agreeing to this...am I right? Who should I ask? Might sound daft question, sorry...

Yes, I think I'd just accept that the new vets will need to see her before they are happy to prescribe anything for her.

And having accepted that (and the fact that I'd be paying a callout and an "examine horse" fee), I'd make the most of the opportunity to get to know the vet and bring them up to speed with her history. Maybe there's a vet report, or a brief summary you can give them for their records?

You never know, a fresh set of vet eyes might come up with a different idea on how to progress, and at the very least they will be more likely to be happy to give you more bute without necessarily seeing her the next time.

Hope all goes well.

Don't know where you are exactly but some vets eg OGorman, Slater and Maine have a day a week in each area where you can have a routine visit for less money as long as you book it in advance.

Thanks, yes, what I thought. The major investigation is now 1 1/2 years back. I did not feel like following up on it at the time having gone through hospital stay and the rest of it I was just glad to leave her alone... of course now insurance won't cover this back injury anymore, but it may well be worth having a new person look at her. Thanks, not sure if my vets do these routine visits free, but can find out.
