When I went to a yard locally last year they had alot of cousin jacks bedding lying around. I asked them about it and they told me that they really liked the bedding and that it was very much like miscanthus but better. From what I gather you could it delivered to your yard by the pallet for a reasonable price but I cant seem to find a telephone number for them anywhere.

So my questions are:

Do cousin jack bedding even exisit anymore?

Has anyone used it and what is it like?

How much did you pay?

And has anyone got a contact number for them?

Thanks!

Yes, I use it. It comes from Cornwall I think and is sold under the name of 'Happy Jack'.

It is essentially chopped straw treated with eucalyptus. It is very absorbant (far more than shavings), smells wonderfull when you first put it down and has very little dust content.

I don't have a number but I do believe they do pallet deliveries. I pay about £5-6 a bale from my local feed merchants.

I am a total convert, wouldn't want to bed on anything else now!

Ah, thank-you foxglove. Maybe I should try searching happy jack.

Yeah, this yard I went to kept telling me how lovely it smelt. Have you ever used miscanthus? If so how does it compare?

Do you deep litter on it? Last winter I used miscanthus and only had to remove the wet once every week. Really liked it but it has gone upto £6.50 a bale now which I think is a bit steep considering there are cheaper alternatives on the market. Theres alot of ppl on my yard who use miscanthus and depending on their minimum order amount I think I could get alot of ppl there to use it instead.

I have rubber matting and only use 1 bale a week per horse.

I deep litter my little arab and change the bedding weekly. It is really absorbent and I have never has a problem with the wet coming through.

My Tb, I bank it up and will take the wet out daily and pull a bit of bedding down. When she was on box rest I still only used a bale a week.

I have never used micanthos or anything like that so can't really compare. But it is definately better than the hemp stuff one of my friends used!

jrp204 - they used to sell direct to yards (maybe they dont anymore though). Have straw prices really gone through the roof? Friend has just offered me small bale straw at the price he was doing it for last year (£2.50) and he has plenty of it. I politely declined as I dont like straw (more ends up eaten then gets used). That shop is quite far from me unless they deliver.

Foxglove, very useful thank-you, sounds as good as miscanthus to me but I cant find out how to contact them anywhere. I am currently trying cardboard bedding which is cheap and I'm not finding it too bad. Will know better how good it is in a few days.

Straw around here is making £100/ac, or £65/t. A fairly big rise on last year. The eastern counties also have smaller crops as they have had it alot drier than us. It may be worth ringing cj's, they told me last year they didn't supply individuals but you never know.
