Long story short - sheltie bitch is in heat (approx 10th day) and sheltie dogs has mounted her about 1000 times and they still have not tied. She is standing but it just doesn't seem to be working! Her previous two heats have been similar, although at least she is not attacking him now.

This is our first attempt at breeding shelties, and tbh starting to think it is a waste of time. We have never had these issues with our other dogs!

Any advice/explanations welcome.

Are they both maidens? Ime it is always advisable to have one experienced dog, if he is a novice you may well have to guide him in. For what its worth I am daft enough to think that if a bitch really doesn't want to be mated then sometimes they know better than us and its best to let nature win. I have heard of quite a few cases where forced matings have resulted in problem whelpings, dead pups etc.
And to be a boring old f**t, presume both dogs are eye tested, hip scored and DNA tested for CEA.

Yep, all checked and so on. I am also boring She is a maiden, and really only want a litter as my Mum wants one of her puppies. I think I might just look in to getting her a puppy from a proper kennels. I only have a hobbyist interest in showing etc, so not that worried about establishing brilliant lines or anything! The dog has sired litters before, and he breeds nice puppies that are better than himself (they have ring presence, he really dislikes showing but is nicely to standard).

Perhaps she's not quite ready even though she's standing, my girls are usually most receptive around day 13. Usually have them mated that day, miss a day then repeat, although my last two litters have been from single matings.

If you want to be sure she's ovulating, your vet should be able to do a blood test although it may be cutting it fine if she is ready now, you usually get a 5 day window
