Hi everyone
Does anyone know if it is permitted to travel to collect a horse I am potentially going to purchase?
I don’t really want to pay for a transporter when I could do it myself - but I obviously will if it’s not allowed. Would be travelling from England to Wales

Depends on the police team who might stop and quiz you, especially on the welsh side of the border. The welsh police are coming down very hard on unnecessary journeys eg for long journeys to buy a car.

Don’t expect a sympathetic response if you do get stopped, they’ve heard all the #whyme# excuses.

Depends where in Wales I think. We're very close to the border and haven't had any problems going into England. I think further into Wales you might get stopped.

Personally, I would wait. I was about to purchase a horse back in March. Lockdown was announced to start the day after the vetting. I cancelled the vetting and put the sale on hold. Seller was more than understanding. I got the horse when lockdown was lifted.

I should point out I'm not British but German so much less affected with lockdown restrictions. But what if the horse is purchased by a business not a private person? I somehow disagree with this concept of one person's lifelihood being classed essential when another's isn't. The way I see it every job matters because it feeds a family? Why is my family worth more because I am a vet or someone elses because they're working in transport while someone who owns a shop, works in hospitality or in a cleaning firm is demanded to stick to their house. I just don't get it. Also not sure about the state with public transport in the UK but over here it's running as before just with masks and as long as that is the case I am not surprised virus keeps spreading and numbers go up... The whole thing stinks big time.

I'm not sure why you're concerned about British restrictions if you live in Germany. That aside, it is about keeping the economy going, with the exception of hospitality as that would mean many people being and sitting indoors when it's not a necessity, as food shopping would be classed as. Cleaning firms are allowed to work. I don't think it matters who purchases the horse, business or private person, but a private person should only be travelling for essential travel. I would not class either viewing or picking up a horse as essential unless it were for welfare reasons. I don't know about Germany, but there seems a number of people over here who think it is acceptable to wear their mask under their nose, so completely missing the point. I think there are many reasons it's spread so much here.

Possibly because I have personal and business interest in Britain being that we board horses for British customers, have sold horses to British citizens and that I purchased in excess of 120 Ponies in Britain over the years, easily spent 2-3 trips per year staying in British-owned B&B's, Hotels as a business tourist and feel deeply sorry for all the small businesses that will go down the drain with this. Also I was unaware that only British opinions were acceptable on this board, last time I checked it was very much an open and international equestrian platform. Will abstain from any further comments and apologize for intruding if you take offense with my comment. I think while my pov might be of no interest to you personally I should still allowed to sympathize with my fellow British friends, customers and hosts who are suffering from the situation. PS Given this thread is titled 'Covid-travel' and not 'How is Britain affected by Lockdown' it might be not me who is OT in this instance?

Its a thread asking about travelling to transport a recently purchased horse from England to Wales and back in lockdown #3, and how best to do this.

It may be tricky to appreciate the ins and outs of this from Germany.

I don't comment on other countries restriction as I don't have personal or business reasons to do so and quite honestly England's rules change frequently enough without confusing myself with rules that don't concern me. I haven't said you couldn't comment, just queried why you would be interested, but you have since stated your interest.

I can honestly say that I've only had once seen anything remotely like police checks.
I drive for a living and travel roughly 2500 to 3000 km a week. That's often Scotland/ England/Wales in the same day.
Having said that I do feel the op is making the right decision..the less people using the services the safer it is for those that have no choice but use them.
