Cow pats

For the last week my mare has had really runny poo, like cow pats. She does have the biggest winter field, so possibly the grass coming through?

She hasn’t lost weight so the vet isn’t concerned. She does have significant liver damage but he doesn’t think it’s related.

She was on Protexin before but didn’t notice any difference so stopped feeding it. Is it worth trying brewers yeast or yea sacc?

I had a fair bit of tummy upsets, runny poo and passing quantities of liquid with every poo with my old cob. steadily getting worse every winter. This winter I have increased his intake of pre-chopped fibre (Graze On, Silvermoor veteran haylage, Fast Fibre) in addition to his usual nets. The problems have cleared, and he is holding his weight this year.
In his case, I think failing teeth meant that the fibre wasn't reaching the foregut as mashed up and chewed as it should be, so the hindgut couldn't do it's stuff properly. Sorry if this is not much help tp you.

Hay is the culprit for mine although they have been fine on the meadow hay we bought at the beginning of the month. I am guessing it might be rye grass that's the trouble. I feed psyllium to mine

Was it the gut balancer from protexin you've tried? (If so that already has brewers yeast in)

My old boy had very wet poo and the vet gave him Colonaid which helped, and diagnosed him with colitis due to becoming suddenly (why do they do this to us?) intolerant to bute. He also had to have his hay chopped up because the long strands were irritating his intestines. He was 35 when it started, cleared up and he had another decent year.

Just reviving this thread rather than starting a new one...my youngster has just moved to summer grazing and although I am bringing him in for a few hours in the middle of the day and in at night to ease him onto the richer grass, he has developed very runny green cowpats.
Any quick fix supplement to give? Just need something to balance his tummy while he adjusts.

I would try comfort gut or activated charcoal

Protein quick fix in the syringe is better than the powder or activated charcoal for a few weeks will help.
