Cr@p schooling session last night - why do I ride!?!?

Sometimes i think i only ride for the demoralisation that i get when it all goes wrong!!

Tried schooling my 5 year old last night - started off in the school (indoor) and was horribly dusty so gave up and took her into one of the spare fields. Well, that was a good idea if ever i've had one

Ellie decided that it was the perfect opportunity to trot round with her head in the air, and be as stupid as possible, i dont think we actually managed a normal circle, and nevermind a straight line! She would NOT accept the left rein at all and reverted back to her old trick of falling out through the shoulder at every opportunity. Normally when she does this i nip it in the bud straight away and no probs, but i can honestly say there was not a single positive moment at all

I suppose though if i am honest, she's only 5, and she's just had a couple of weeks off as i've been away. It was also the first ever time she was ridden in the field. I was hoping to do a walk and trot test with her in a couple of weeks, but if she wont even listen to me in a field with no proper distractions i dread to thnik what she would be like at a show!!! Maybe I'll give that one a miss....

Sorry pointless post really, other than to make myself feel even worse!

Ach, we've all had days like that. And you did say she's only 5...and not ridden while you've been away. Answered your own questions really.
You know what they say, horses are great levelers.
 
oh i no i'm being silly about it! I just really want to get her out and do a first show....its getting later and later on in the year and still not done one, and she went so well on sat and sun out hacking but hey ho!! I am sure she will better tomo night, goign to go for a hack tonight!!!

We all feel like that sometimes, don't worry, you aren't alone. I have a 5 year old too and it can be very demoralising!

But TBH, it can only get better

And besides, when they're young just getting them out and seeing things (or in my youngsters case, hearing the tannoy!!) is such a great experience. I think you should go for your walk and trot test anyway. It doesn't matter how you do. Plus, you'll get some useful comments from the judge (hopefully) and what's more, your horse may just surprise you

it is nice to know that you are not the only one..... I thought it was just me stuggling with my 5 year old as everyone else seemed to be doing so well.

I would go to the "party" regardless of how she is going. outings are always good and sometimes they surprise you
 
I guess worse case scenario i look like a number one prat!!!!

I think the most annoying thing is she can go so well and has me grinning from ear to ear (just not last night!)!

I'm currently feeling a little 'why do I bother' as I am horseless at the minute and will be for a good couple of years while I finish my degree and do my PGCE for teaching . . I love my weekly lessons and hacks but I want more!!!! Lol - I can't get enough and miss having my own so much!! Once you're bitten by the bug they're with you for life!
