Got my horse out of his stable last night to tack up and ride and he was going crazy, stamping, kicking and rearing. Untied him and started to walk him in the hope he would settle and then noticed he had a small insect that looked like a flying ant that had landed in his rump and was burrowing and biting him. Got it off and he settled immediately. A few people have suggested it could be a crab fly or a deer ked. It's tiny, about 5mm in length, has wings, six legs and very obvious separate head and body sections and is dark brown/black.
Anyone come across these evil things before??and more importantly how do you get rid/prevent it coming back?

Yep - All I can say is BLEUGHHHH!!!
Blooming things seem impossible to kill even with a precise ninja chop!!

Common in the New Forest (Where we found them on Holidays)

Maybe some new forest bods might have a better idea of how to get rid - My only solution was 50mph for 40miles in the other direction ;)

This might help - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?241813-Crab-Flies

Yep I hate them, they remind me of a flying tick. They're really hard to kill. I squish them between my thumb nails. They like the warm parts, normally under the tail and general 'jacksie' area. If you're quick you can catch them in your hand quite easily and do 'em in. Luckily, we don't get many and don't see them every year. A little bit of fly repellent in the 'crack' will make them go to pastures new....Vile creatures.

That's me learnt something new today. I'd never heard of these before, now I've googled them, I kind of wish I hadn't what horrible little critters. Squish the lot of 'em I say!

i hadn't heard of them until friend got her NF pony, he wasn't bothered by them in the slightest while we all jumped around squealing like proper girls lol, not seen them since and don't want to and i certainly won't be touching any ponies when i got to the New Forest next!
