My horse has had this crack since I bought him (a year) it has never gotten better some times there is bruising but no pain and my farrier said the bruising isn’t to worry about but I do worry although he is completely sound. I was wondering if there is a way it will get better my farrier gives it a rasp every time he does him to make sure it dosnt get deeper I know some people will agree with this and some won’t. But it helps us keep track. It’s not very deep and is maybe 3 mm deep at the max but he never rasps that far so only about half of it comes away. Would a supplement help would regularly oil on his feet help. His feet do not grow very fast. Does any one have a horse with this. Should I be worried ? I thought it would have gone by now. Will get a picture tomorrow of what it looks like after the farrier has been (he came today but I don’t have a picture). So will get one of it tomorrow pic with the shoe is 9 moths ago pic without shoe is today while being shod

If it does go right up into the coronary band it is likely it will always be there. If his hooves are slow growing though I would give him a good barefoot-based balancer/supplement (so forageplus/pro earth) though.

(ps well done on photo posting so quickly, it's not the easiest forum for it!)

If you take a screen shot of the picture then it normally makes it small enough to attach.
Thankyou d

it’s not the easiest is it ?. It does go all the way up and there is a slight bit of discolouration on the skin above coronary band which is a scar or something along the lines what do you think of the bruising? It’s some times just the tip of his hoof like in the picture and some times it’s in the middle or like a vertical line down the middle near the crack. We do jump and use wooden poles and he can catch them especially doing grid work so could that cause the bruising. He’s not sore on it but there is always some sort of bruising. Although my farrier said it’s not to worry about. I can’t help it ??‍♀️

I have a horse with exactly this, only deeper. Caused by previous laceration of the coronet, happened years ago before the horse came to me. There is scarring in the flesh where it was originally cut. It does not cause any lameness, nor does dirt etc get into the hoof. The farrier says the hoof is good in all respects. The foot was x-rayed, which showed the split to be superficial, though outwardly it looks drastic. The crack on mine is too deep to rasp out, and anyway it would only change the outward appearance of it.
Based on my experience, it causes no problems, but it will not grow out, and supplements won't cure it. So long as the hoof is otherwise healthy, like your farrier says, there is nothing to worry about.
Mine has not had the bruising that you mention, and the hooves are white so it would show up. Are you sure this is really related to the hoof crack? If it continues to worry you, an x-ray will show you better what is going on in the foot.

My farrier said it’s probably from knocking poles not to do with the crack and there is no way to prevent it really as no boots cover that part of the hoof and I’m glad I found one one else with the same problem thankyou for your advice. I trust my farrier but just wanted other opinions

That looks cosmetic to me. You can see it's not very deep because where the bottom is rasped away it disappears.

Hi, I have one similar though less dramatic - result of a bit of grit bursting out the coronet over 4 years ago. I try to keep the coronet area supple, and the whole hoof at a reasonable moisture level. I have no idea if it helps, but it makes me feel better! I mostly use msm cream or decent hoof oil, and I feed a decent hoof supplement.
