i did two of mine in the summer- getting rodeoed off onto a fence 
did it on the wednesday- was jumping on the thursday as was supposed to be eventing on the saturday. it hurt like mad but i didn't strap it but did wear BP to ride which stopped it jiggling about too much. in the end i didn't go eventing because the superdooper painkillers the doc gave me sent me all funny and i ended up passing out facefirst into the floor- made a right mess of my face
but i did carry on riding. the docs said to be careful to breathe as deeply as possible- so keep on top of your painkillers withut making yourself ill (which is what i did)- they were agony for a couple of weeks and then after that i would say they hurt for 2.5 months- especially if i got out of breath and started breathing more heavily...
