Young dog has had to work really hard the last week as our keeper friend is away. She dogs in with a mad enthusiasm never before seen in a lab, crashing through brambles, branches and nettle beds. She is really quite lame tonight with several splits in her paws. Any ideas on making them more comfortable and preventing them happening again? Keeper is back now so the spaniels are taking over, but she is so fit that taking it easy is not really an option.

My labs feet crack really easily if he is on rough ground for a period of time.
We out boots on him for periods of time when he is on ground which is likely to do it- or if we are biking. He has canine equipment ultimate trail boots - they are tough and have had them 18months and just starting to show some wear and tear

Thank you for that. I am not sure they would stay on in the water and ditches? I would worry about her catching them I think.

Could you rub some lanolin into them, won't be poisonous as it's the oil from sheeps wool. Would help keep them supple. Hopefully they'll heal really quickly with a couple of easy days. Pets at home do antibacterial paw wipes, of maybe just use some sensitive moisturising baby wipes. Guess you don't want to encourage her to lick them though.

We asked similar on here a year or two ago, and were recommended Mushers Secret, a paw wax. It worked really well on our lab that has dry paws that crack. I found it on ebay.

Lovely, thank you. This is why people have black labs - the black one never hurts herself!

My black lab has poorly feet. She has SLO, symmetrical lupoid onochondryplasia (or something like that) an auto immune disorder where her body recognises her toenails as a foreign body and tries to destroy them. She is 10.5 years, developed it 18 months ago. Can't be treated just has to have oils to encourage new growth. We are lucky as it doesn't seem to bother her and she keeps just enough nail to stop infections developing.

My lab is also black. In answer to your question they have stayed on him when he has been swimming, paddling in bogs. They are pretty awesome but I think that paw wax sounds good- may get some myself!

I won't generalise about blacks then! I think our blakc is just slower and more sensible and if she finds a pheasant in a bramble patch she wags her tail until you do something, whereas Lil Yellow dives straight in.
