Cracks behind knees in a chunky horse?

I ride an ID cross for a friend.

He is suffering with recurrent cracking behind his knees, and also a bit on the inside of his back fetlocks.

It looks a bit like mud fever but I have never seen mud fever in lines like it is up his back legs, or as high as his knees.

The vet gave his owner some Cortisone cream but it isn't clearing up and he gets really sore.

Any ideas? :(
 
Mites? Get vet back out to do skin scrape. My daughters old cob had this and it was a nightmare to clear and made pony very sore.
 
Thanks. Would mites live on him even though he isn't hairy?

His legs are kept clipped out, but I don't know if that makes a difference? (sorry if I sound really thick now!)

My boy gets it, looks like a line of mud fever/ mite rash behind his knee. Definately Mallanders. I treat it with Bepanthan. Works a treat. Just rub it in every couple of days, then brush away the loose scabs. Cures it very quickly. If it comes back in a few months, rinse and repeat :)

That's the one - I was trying to remember the name, I knew I'd heard it somewhere!
