horrible.
a cavesson noseband should never be tight, the horse needs to be able to flex and move his jaw in order to mouthe the bit and salivate as he works correctly soft and through the poll and the jaw, if it is clamped shut by one of these abominations (which are so tempting to do tight) then he is unable to. vile.
Fine, as long as they're not overtight. I treat them as caverson making sure I can get 2 fingers in. So really no point in having them, for me, but one of my bridles came with horse which had one. I wouldn't go out and buy one though, and certainly hate it when people tighten them as much as possible.
I have one but it is never done up tight, its is used as a pinchless version of a normal noseband due to the padding and like all cavessons should just there to frame the face not to do anything.
They are horrid if tightened fully, but I dont!
so it is dependent on the rider being responsible and not abusing the noseband (like not wearing really sharp spurs, tightening martingale so much horse cant move etc etc)
They are actually quite good in combination with a flash, as its one of the few that don't "droop" in front and obstruct the breathing.
I am using one on my horse, but its not done up tight. I do agree that in dressage circles, especially in combination with a double bridle they are people would do them up incredibly tight.
I like them purely from an aesthetic/vanity point of view. I like chunky padded nosebands and therefore all mine go in them. I just do them up at a regular cavesson tightness though!

I dont make them too tight and my horse much prefers it too a normal one, i think its to do with the padding she always goes better and can really tell the difference when i put the birdle without one on.
He doesn't really have much say with his gob taped shut does he though! Seriously, I don't use one on T as he has a standing martingale (another abomination that is sadly necessary). Other ponio has one only because he looks better in chunky nosebands and his regular noseband was rubbing him, but I do not do it up any tighter than a normal cavesson.
My bridle came with one and a flash, I took the flash of as horse kept rubbing his nose on anything he could find. I have the crank part as loose as possible.
I have one on my horse, it's never done up tight, she can still open her mouth and flap her tongue about!!! It is the only noseband not to have rubbed her chin, she is very fussy about her head and objects strongly to her mouth being clamped shut, she will not tolerate a flash, but she is perfectly happy in the crank, I know for a fact that she would show her dissaproval if I ever did it up too tight.
