Crank Nosebands

Please could someone tell me how these nosebands work? Also pros & cons please?! Are they severe or kind?! My basic understanding is that they're not unlike a cavesson but you actually have them tighter?!
Never used one before but was thinking of buying a comfort bridle and it has a crank noseband.

I dont like crank nosebands particularly because its very, very easy to over-tighten them... and i dont just mean deliberatly! Its easy to do it by accident as well.

I think many people feel because they tend to be excessivly padded, that it means they can afford to tighten the noseband more than they would a straight forward cavesson, but the padding doesnt make the noseband kinder when fastened too tightly.

They basically have a pulley buckle around the back of the nose that allows you to "crank" (hence the name), the noseband in tighter than you likely could with a cavesson.

Do you particularly want a crank noseband? There are comfort bridles out there without

I don't particularly want a crank noseband but I haven't seen any with a normal cavesson (I might not be looking hard enough?!). I am on a budget and as much as I'd love an Elevator I can't afford one so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know! Thanks!
 
crank nisebands are the work of the devil. they are designed to be 'cranked' as tight as possible. it s bad enough that regular flash nosebands are done up too tight with out the extra tightening facility offered by cranks. To be relaxed in his jaw the horse needs to have some leeway to move the lower jaw forward (am sure someone will know the proper term- something or other displacement). No horse of mine will ever wear one. if your noseband needs to be that tight, it is indicative of a problem elsewhere IMO.
 
My big horse has to have a crank nose band because its the only type that adjusts enough to fit his ridiculously large head, it is only done up on the loosest hole and not at all tight.
 
Hi, I have a comfort bridle and it has a crank noseband, not used one before this one but I have it on the 3rd hole and it isn`t tight at all, I can fit 2 fingers between her nose and the noseband. It is supposed to work better than the cavesson as it has an even pressure around the nose and it only comes into work when horse opens his mouth. Rox doesn`t but she works well in the comfort bridle. In the wrong hands, done up too tightly, then they can be harsh. But so can anything.
