I was wondering if anyone else out there who's horse has crashed withers?

I bought my horse over a year ago - he past a stage 5 vetting and since then he was found to have suspensory ligament damage - which he's come through (although will never be able to jump) - when he was in getting investigated for this my vet told me he had crashed withers (me being naive didn't see when i tried him out - i placed too much faith in a vetting - believe me i've learned some harsh lessons this year) and x-rayed them to check they weren't causing him problems - and it was something he did as a foal (now 10 yo)

His crashed withers do not affect him in any way other than the obvious that he looks like he has no wither

please explain what 'crashed withers' are. Ive never heard of them and am curious. Surely if his withers have been damaged there would be a follow up of lameness or bad back! Mairi.

One of the horses at the college i studied at had broken her withers in the past in a accident in the stable. She was ridden everyday and didnt appear to suffer. I cant remember if she ever jumped after this but i know she still used to be ridden over poles etc.

I know a horse that broke his withers in the field - they think he must have rolled on a rock or something. Once healed he was fine and was able to undertake full work, including hunting - just looked very odd in front of the saddle!

my yearling turned herself over in the field and did this

15 years later she's had 2 foals, in foal for the 3rd time, done XC and dressage (sj not her thing), finished 4th pony racing and is now in foal again. She also passed a grading as well and got placed in hand showing at county level so I'd not worry about it tbh

Yeah my vet fully checked him out and he's not affected in anyway from it - but it's apparently common for it to happen when they are foals and not in full control of limbs - it's healed perfectly fine and happened when he was a baby...

just wanted to know i'm not alone really

by crashed withers it's basically that they have been crushed -

My Jack has had broken withers - they kind of sit off to the side slightly. They don't seem to affect him at all. He can do a beautiful outline and jump like a stag and loves cross country.
