chaos has been happily going into the crate while ive been out, but he has suddenly started singing (think howling like a banshee) when he is left alone in the crate, he shuts up as soon as you go in line of sight of the crate but starts up as soon as he cant see you, does anyone have any suggestions
he has a nice pile of blankets in the crate and his fav toy

Put a sheet over it so that he can't see?
Do you pay attention to him or talk to him when he breaks into song, or do you ignore him?

Cayla is yer woman for crate training though

Have u tried a radio and a cover, this way u can potter around when the cover is on and the radio so when u dissapear he will be confused as to whether u are still there or not, u must always exercise the fact that he has to be in the crate when u are pottering around the house and not just placed in there when u go out, hence he is connecting the 2.

I would try a new routine with a cover the radio and him being in there when u are in aswell as out for periods of time and try to tire him out before hand, but also if u are in when he begins to whinge, a FIRM "QUIET" as a reprimand but no talking otherwise.

Introduce a new treat that he only gets when in the crate, kong with cheese and ham or tuna mixed with his own dry food

and remove when u let him out, so he assosiates getting it when he goes in there and no other time, the same old treat left tends to get boring.

he is fine in the crate until he hears the door go so when im in and hes in the crate (say if we have none doggy visitors) he never makes a noise
my trainer suggested squirting him with water when hes noisy but i cant see how that will work as he shuts up when im near enough to squirt him

Hello There i sware by create's all my dogs are in them have you tried feeding him in the create, also get inside with him and show him there is nothing to be scared of, you have to be strict when he howles dont let him out or he will do it all the more, just tell him NO and LIE DOWN, and ignore him biut when he has settled go and let him out and fuss over him just repeate untill he gets the hang of it . Hope this Helps you out.
My regards

He sounds like he has no problem with the crate itself, but he is assosiating the door with your going........so the radio should help drown that out, but also when u come home the door then means u are back(cue excitement), it needs to be very low key when u enter, so u need to come home no fuss or talk and no letting him out when he is in an excited state, so potter around first, so he does not assosiate u coming home with a huge fuss, and when he settles and u are ready to let him out, simply let him outside to do his business, still no fuss or touch or talk.

Again u need to confuse him, so randomly open and close the door and then stroll in and out of the room he is crated and around the house so he can still hear you, this way the door sound does not always mean u are gone
