Hi

My horse is currently undergoing tests as he has hair loss over his face and neck and has completely lost his tail.

It has been going on for a little while so he has had; fungal washes, skin scrapes, mite and lice treatment and now blood testing.
His liver enzymes came back as very slightly elevated so we are awaiting further external lab tests on this and we have also sent for a selenium test as toxicity can cause hair loss.

He is fed basic chaff and course mix and is a very good dose (is currently on a weight loss program!!) and I’ve never used supplements other than recently when I added a hair and skin supplement which made the hair loss worse so stopped this on vets advice.

One of the vets has suggested he has seen this before with a horse who reacted to creosote..
our field posts have been treated with creosote so now concerned this has leached into the soil and is causing this issue. Has anyone had anything similar?

His hair improved slightly in the winter when he was stabled overnight so thinking this may be because the exposure to the affected ground was reduced.

It’s all becoming a bit of a mystery and we are following any leads we can as I just feel so sorry for him. He’s fine in himself and full of life but has no tail to protect himself and due to his white skin has to be in shade or rugged otherwise he’ll burn as soon as it warms up.

Just looking for advice really and if anyone has experienced similar. The current plan is to build his paddock in the centre of one of the larger fields so that he doesn’t eat near the treated fences.

Proper creosote has been banned for several years now, so if it has been leached into the soil I probably would have expected a few more horses effected than just one.

poor lad, I hope you get to the bottom of his alopecia soon!
