Creosote, creocote, or what??

So nice weather FINALLY, means I can get on with painting my stables and shelter. I'm unsure what the best thing to use is, ideally I'd like to be able to apply whatever I'm using with a fence sprayer - recommendations please for something that looks nice (light natural wood look, I'm not interested in coloured paint) and lasts really well (oil based?) Aware that creosote isn't considered very good for the environment nowadays, although I'd be able to get some if I wanted. Oh and I don't want to spend an absolute bomb 😁
 
Unless things have changed you can’t apply creosote with a sprayer. Because of it being flammable I guess. Creocote I don’t know about sprayer but it’s not as good as the old stuff.
I’d get Cuprinol or an own brand alternative I think, if I were you.
 
We sell lots of creosote but mainly for fencing . I personally wouldn’t use it for stables .
Creocote is one of those products you either love or hate . If you’ve used proper creosote you’re probably not going to like Creocote . Lots of our farmer customers have tried and and always go back to the real stuff .

There’s lots of cheap water based woodstain products out there . But they don’t last that long . We’ve a load in stock but our customers tend to trade up a bit when I explain the more expensive stuff will last a good few years . Even the most frugal farmer has traded up and actually phoned me to say how impressed she was.

So my advice get a good quality oil based woodstain . Check if it has UV protection and what the guarantee is ( I’d expect a min 5 years )

For those who hate painting check out Jotun demidekk . Has a 12 year warranty.
I saw some fencing that had been in this product ( 8 years ago) and it still looked fab. Be prepared it’s blooming expensive and it is a paint as opposed to a stain .
I’ve used it on my field shelter. It’s cracking
 
I have got a friend who has got half a barrel of creosote.... But we did put in some creosote fence posts earlier this year and I ended up with chemical burns so I'm a bit loath to use it. Also would like to be able to spray it on!

Just checked out the Jotun stuff and wow that is very expensive!!!! I definitely want oil based

No its not banned. We can only sell it to certain places. Farms/small holdings etc
 
Even creosote is not the same as old creosote. It’s not made with coal tar now I don’t think. I have got some new creosote here and next door has got an ancient barrel of the original stuff and if I’m doing red mite treatment I use his.

Fact of the day, my Granny had asthma. She had one of the first inhalers, way back when, and its active ingredient was creosote.
Probably not surprisingly she died of a rare lung cancer.

Then id recommend a couple of products :

1. Gori , come in a variety of colours. Both paint and woodstain ( everyone who has bought this loved it)
2. Johnstsones woodworks range.

we sell coal tar creosote. BUT, its good, but id says not as good as 20 years ago.
 
I used Cuprinol sprayable fence. It wasn’t the cheapest but I was impressed with its waterproofing qualities. I’ve also used Creocote on the old stables, which isn’t as waterproof, but has held its colour well, so much so, that none of my stables need doing this year 😀
 
I used a woodstain and very, very pleased with the results. I can’t ever seem to post photos on here without it being too big but the stables look very smart.

I’ve only done it this year so I can’t advise how it lasts but I used Ronseal wood stain which has a 10 year guarantee apparently.
 
I'm one who loves creosote, the proper stuff! I'm lucky, it doesn't burn me but it's more pleasant if you don't use a sunny day that's for sure and can throw your clothes away after.
Years ago, Twemlows asked us (hubby and son had a fencing company) to do some post and rails for them; we had done other work for both them and the family before that. They were supplying the materials. They had bought wood that was absolutely pickled in creosote and still wringing wet of it but time was of the essence so they cracked on even though it was spraying up as they hit it. That night they came back blistered and burnt with bad chests which lasted a few days. They had to tell them they wouldn't do any more unless they either changed the materials or waited a few months for it to dry properly . Needless to say, even though they offered a better fee for the job to be done NOW, we declined; it wasn't worth the damage to their health. The job was done by someone else the next week and lord knows what state he was in when finished.
