Need some help from you peeps...I have to say that whilst I was trying to patch things up with my horse tonight after our upset (see earlier post)...I was wondering what a cresty neck actually is, feels like and looks like...
Can anyone explain to me please?

My horses neck is firm when you squeeze it by placing your hand over the bit where the mane grows from...there is give in it, but it is firm and as far as I know...always has been...so I would love a conparision...particularly from anyone that has non native good doer horses.

A cresty neck is not neccessarily a sign of laminitis, but fat does deposit on the neck in fatter ponies. Stallions also have cresty necks, so if your horse is a boy who was cut late he may retain a bit of a crest.

My pony has quite a crest (seems to be the last fatty bit to go) and its firm. I would imagine that sort of neck would be very obvious on a finer horse, it looks a bit more normal on a cobby good doer.

One of the horses at work had Lami last year. He is out of an anglo arab mare by a show pony stallion and is very pony like but stands at 15hh (with boxy feet!). Lami could have been caused by concussion though jumping, signs of cushings, stress (had a very long day travelling) vet couldn't tell us but what he did say was although he looked well and not fat he did have fatty deposits on his bottom (like cellulite) and his neck was cresty - not to look at but to feel it was absolutely solid and would not move. Murphy is a cob and has a solid neck but this was very different - felt like you could pull him over without it giving!
