cresty pony lame on all 4

Who will do want exactly ,the owner has had a vets advice .
They can bring in an independent vet. The horse is suffering, the law is not there to protect bad vets, the statement that horse is being treated by vet is abused time and time again by bad owners.

RSPCA should never ever take owners statement as valid if it is suffering unnecessarily, it is their job to prevent suffering.

This story rings a bell as I loaned a pony to poeple who let her get laminitis but failed to recognise it and their vet said it was urinary colic ????? she stood on all four feet because they were all sore!!! She was pts! Stupid stupid people who wouldn't listen.

Not working next week as its half term and owner gets the kids in so am relying on a livery friend he hasn't gone out yet but is still lame could it be something else? Or can this go on for a while?

Has the management changed then? If it is laminitis it will continue unless treated with strict diet, hoof support, correct trim (if required) and drugs if required, ie. if the pony has Cushings (PPID).
Has another vet seen the pony? The pony must be seen by an Equine vet for a correct diagnosis.

If it's a bad case then even with prompt & correct treatment it can take a long time to fix & even then some cases can't be saved. At the moment the treatment this pony is getting sounds far from satisfactory. Has the farrier seen him yet, & if so what did he think?

If he was mine I'd want x-rays taken to assess what level of damage is already there & so the farrier could trim & support accurately. The owners need to be aware of what they may be getting into because it's unlikely this will be a quick fix - I would expect they're looking at months rather than weeks & then needing to change his management so the situation doesn't recur as soon as he goes back out.

farrier not been apparently I hope he hasn't cancelled. friend say's pony in stable still not gone out so at least that is in his favour. I would agree about the X-rays but owner has been told its thrush! I offered to get my vet at my expense but was told basically to mind my own business. Back on Monday as half term kids work. Just hope he doesn't go out.

jhg could you take advantage of the fact that you aren't at work this week & there are more people around with it being half term & report it to a welfare organisation who'll send someone out? Presumably plenty of people have seen the pony in this week & any one of them could have reported it while you, on the other hand, haven't even been there. I'd say it's your best chance to get somethig done for him without being obviously involved.

Farrier been pony now got resin supports and heartbars on fronts and heartbars on hind. Owner admits to lami as he has no option but is playing down how severe. I expect to have resin supports pedal bone must have rotated in fronts. Box rest and bute two weeks then review. He was Xrayed but owner not saying anything about them. Hopefully outcome is looking better now.

Thanks everyone x

At least it has been accepted and they are doing something about it, I hope it has been caught quick enough and pony comes sound.

Thanks for the update jhg, and thank God they got the farrier & x-rays! At least he stands a chance now, I just hope they follow instructions to the letter & get good advice from their vet & farrier. Did they get a different vet out for x-rays?

Just caught up with this. There's only one way to deal with an.owner like that but you can't swear or shout and need to have bigger balls than king Kong and not mind losing your job. Because that's not something many can afford to do, welfare is the way forward. I am.glad something is now being done, but if you're not convinced I would still advise a call to bhs welfare or WHW.

Good luck with it. They need to change to an equine vet. Ask your boss if he'd be happy with a dermatologist doing open heart surgery on him? Both doctors for humans, but very different!

It is predominantly a small animal practice but they do have an equine side but not a good reputation they are the only people I know that use them. Pony is getting correct treatment I trust the farrier.

Thanks everyone its been a bad year for lami heard a lot of cases this time
