Any thoughts on Crewe Saddlery? Good or bad?

Need a second hand jumping saddle! I've never used CS so I'm not sure whether they only do their own or just brand new?

Would also be interested in any thoughts on Carol Cattle Saddlery in Shrewsbury.

Thanks

I've used Crewe and didn't know they did make their own saddles! They often change the metal stud/button thingy to their own logo (or used to) as Tweenie's off the peg Farrington saddle has a Crewe Saddle "button" on it, but it's not a Crewe saddle.

When they've been out to me it's always been with various well known brands, or the offer to template your horse for a made to measure, which can take four weeks to be made. However, I've only been offered that service for a Black Country Saddle, not an "own make".

They don't, I'm pretty sure, sell second hand saddles anymore. Last time I asked they cited Ebay as the reason they no longer sell them.

Worth ringing them to find out. I use Sally Cartwright now from Beaver Hall. She seems really good and pretty darned reasonable. Not sure what area she covers though. I thought you had a saddler coming out tomorrow (technically today)?

Thanks C.

I did have a saddler coming out until she cancelled me, AGAIN, at the last minute. This is the third time this has happened, she always cancels right at the last minute, after she's made a fuss about only being able to make that time and made me rearrange my entire day. If I complain she then gives me a sob story and tells me I am difficult. So I am not using her again.

I'll try Beaver Hall - I can always drive him up there if need be

Can only say what I know about Carol which is she has a vast array of tack, rugs and clothing which she has bought from various places like tack auctions and then sells on. If you're looking for something, she's quite likely to have it or be able to source it; at not bad prices too (I've bought various things when I've seen her stand at shows; always worth a browse!) but I don't know anything about her saddle fitting skills at all.

Hi, I've used Crewe saddlery for all my saddles and i have found that have offered a good service but can be a bit pricey!!
They only sell saddles these days and have moved away from selling everything else which is a shame but they have always been reliable and professional.
You can either take your horse to them or they come out to you but they charge if they come out to you and i think it's about £20 - £25 per horse...you would need to call them to double check.
They always offered me a wide choice in saddles from lesser known makers to the big brand names so they always have something to suit your budget.
They don't sell second hand ones anymore and to be honest the second hand ones they used to sell weren't much cheaper than a new one!!!
The vists were always friendly and helpful and they didn't try selling you the most expensive saddle, they rather sell you a saddle that's right for you and your horse.
I've had 3 saddles off them (had a youngster so changed alot) and would use them again for my new horse (he's only 15 months so might be a while yet).
They check your horses back, measure, fit and then watch you ride or do whatever you need to do in your saddle and they always take a good selection with them so you can try others.
It sounds like i work for them!!! but when you've had good service i think you should let others know about it as normally people only complain.

Good Luck and it's deffo worth giving them a call.
PS they are shut Sundays and Mondays.

Thanks MFH - I spoke to Carol this morning and she said to go over and take a look next week. I think I'm going over with my YO. C said take a template of him, take my dressage saddle which fits, and she'll find me some jumping saddles that are somewhere near that template. YO's saddler says she will come out next week to check out any that I like

I had CS saddlery out last week, always a good service! Very knowledgable and qualified staff which I think is the reason for it being a little more expensive, but its peice of mind that your saddle fits well.

They dont do second hand saddles.

Good luck!

Crewe Saddlery's "Own" make are re-badged Farringtons to my knowledge. They ceased to do PX / second hand saddles when they closed the shop, I think?
I have not personally use Carol Cattle but years ago, when my Mum had to replace her saddle at short notice, she bought her's from Carol. Said the place is an Aladdin's cave and there is all sorts there! I certainly have heard nothing bad.
Do you know what you are after size wise? i.e seat size and fitting? Might someone on here have anything for you to try?

If you're after a second hand saddle, you'd be far better off travelling to saddles direct where there's a decent selection. Crewe have loads of new saddles, but unless things have changed, they only had a handful of second hand saddles for sale on behalf of customers. Plus if you want a saddle fitter at saddles direct, there is one you can book to meet you there.
