Cribbing?

Friend's horse was standing with his mouth around his rug hanging over the stable door tonight. Just standing there for ages mouthing slightly with a glazed expression but not with the arched neck I would associate with cribbing.

Would you class this as cribbing and if not any idea why he was doing it?

Was he actually gulping in air? if not then I wouldnt class it as cribbing

i agree if he wasnt sucking in air then no.... i wouldnt think it was cribbing depends really have you seen him do it before ?

He likes sticking his mouth on things but didn't seem to be sucking air. Just looked really wierd

Sounds like my horse - always thought I had accidentally crossed his dam with a labrador. He loves to have something in his mouth - my coat, lead rope, farrier's string vest (very popular with farrier of course).

He can get almost half a lead rope into his mouth (only new ones mind) which he proceeds to chew like a cow with the cud, glazed look on his daft face, dribbling slightly. Never associated it with cribbing, just a desire to chew (he has ad lib haylage so not hungry). He's TB x Hannovarian - maybe it's a German thing?

He is 9, and he did do it alot more as a youngster. He couldn't leave anthing alone then - if you stood near him he would lean out and grab your hair, coat, hat, the saddle, anything, but now he doesn't chew quite so much. Perhaps it started as a teething thing and now it's more of a pleasant habit. But he still tries to grab his reins when I tack him up and will happily suck/chew on one if he gets the chance.

hmm, my mare is exactly the same, she has now taken to putting her mouth around her manger. She also likes to run her teeh on the metal... its not a nice sound! Bee is 6 now but like yours used to suck on everything! Are your reins as tatty looking as mine, ive given up trying to keep them looking nice!
