Critique my jumping please :)

horse is very sweet and willing and your jumping was very neat/ tidy/ precise.

However, I think you should work on your seat in canter as you seem to bounce around alot (this could be because you were trying to sit very straight for the video??).

Yeah this is the same video as the other post, my other post wasnt showing up on laptop anymore so I wasnt sure if it had been deleted so posted it again :)

Regarding canter, I'd noticed that too when looking at video, I think maybe i was concentrating too much on the video and keeping him steady (you can tell when hes trying to canter! haha) so i may've been a bit stiff in canter as a result of trying to hard to relax if that makes sense? Ill have a look at my other videos where I was a bit less nervous to compare

Thanks :) x

In the canter, your hands are good, your lower leg is good but you are stiff through the hips and this is causing you to bounce. Over the jumps, again your lower leg is good and your hands are not too bad. However, you dont look like you're folding very much over the fence and you are coming back to the upright position too early. This not causing any upset at the height of the fences in the video, but if you want to jump higher you are going to have to learn to maintain your forward position in the air for a bit longer or you will be thrown off balance by the horses back end. Also, you will have to learn to stretch your arms forward along the horses neck to allow him to stretch over the jumps or you will end up pulling him mouth if he can't stretch and fences will come down.

Overall, your position is very good for the stage you are at and I would think your riding instructor has all of this covered so keep on what your doing and listen to her. She will have you improving your position as you progress. It looks as though she has been doing a good job so far.

Thank you ZondaR, I only really jump once ever 4-6 weeks in a group lesson so next time I jump I will try and work on what you're saying :) I'm hoping to buy or loan a horse in the summer to work on jumping a lot more. I've got some video of jumping from august and from then to now I've improved loads so hopefully I'll continue getting better :D x

I agree that your jumping is nice and neat, the horse seems to know his job well but keep those heels down and push your weight down so you don't bounce about as much. As the above said too- maybe your trying to sit straight and swish for the video(I too am guilty of this)! Then again.. if this is rising canter you need to hold up more and not bounce down to hard.
Just get those heels down and go with the flow of the horse whilst keeping your upper body straight.
But beautiful jumping position(I dream of having this... *sigh*) afraid my cat jumping unpredictable highland gets told its his fault, poor soul!

Good luck with the Exams though :D:D

Regarding your canter seat - you're leaning back rather, which makes it very difficult to sit properly - if you make a conscious effort to sit up tall, you'll find it easier :)

I blame my cat-leaping cob for my horrific jp - it's much better on my highland :D

Sorry for the digress, OP, just wanted to wave at another highland-nutter :)

I've posted this on a couple of forums and quite a couple have said about the seat in canter, I think I may be trying too hard for the video to sit up straight but also sit back a bit (with Tom the slightest tip forward, he's on the forehand and canters off because of being unbalanced) You can probably see after my demi vault that he wants to canter that circle! I think I was over doing it! Also the stress of knowing if I didnt manage to get that footage I wouldnt have another chance, video needs to be handed in next week.

Would you say my speed, rhythm and canter are better here when I wasnt so camera conscious ?

Its only a tiny course I know :L but we were doing it to warm up as an exercise for accuracy on turns and getting a good canter, seeing a stride etc

Awwwwww what a fab little horse!!! He looks like hes trying so hard for u! I love him! I actually thought u were riding really well in this video. I'm no expert what so ever but i felt u were bouncing a bit too much in canter.

Yeah he tries really hard :) i never really see anyone else riding him so dont know if its his nature or our bond lol. I want to buy/loan him so badly but he's in the riding school :( thank you xx

Looks good so far, although I agree with what the others said about your canter position...

However, I did notice that when jumping the fences that were pushed up against the side of the arena you jumped to the side rather than over the centre of the fence so try to always ride over the centre of the fence...it's probably due to the fact he's a riding school horse so very use to sticking to the track but its something you can easily fix ;) Otherwise very good, keep up the good work!

yeah i did jump on the track a bit :/ normally we have those jumps at B and E off the track but my instructor decided for the video we'd put them on the track to give me a bit more room to turn for the fences on the diagonal and more time to get in control! haha, just so i wouldn't have tight messy turns for video xx

Heya! I have a very fast horse too and I always find that keeping my hands low and wide apart encourages him to accept the bit and not pull or try to go faster. I am definitely no expert but if you sherten your stirrups maybe the canter would be a bit more supple and smooth. If you do hae trouble slowing him down, using lots of circles and downward transitions helps me with my speedy gonzales :) Great jumping position I want mine to be like that.... :)

ooh Ill try that with the hands :) aw thanks Ive heard so many things about my jumping position, first its 'great' then im being 'left behind' haha dunno what to do! xx

I know some of the words are out of sync , the total video is about 17 mins but maximum it would let me upload on youtube is 15 so splitting it into 2 parts messed up timings for some reason.
