Hello

I have Crohns Disease, had it for years now....

just seeing if any other horse owners out there who also suffer from the condition...and whether it effects you competing etc etc

i am just having dressage lessons with my Welsh D and also have a Welsh D filly...

I find that the only time im not in pain is when im down at the yard and they really help me and perk me up from feeling down when im having a flare up...

however somedays my body feels so tired that i struggle etc but refuse to let the illness have an effect on something that i love...

just intrigued to see how other people cope...and whether any other Crohns / Colitis ppl compete and if so what disciplines in?

thanks x

I suffer from Crohns and yes it does really get me down sometimes. I have a 16.1hh warmblood x welsh D mare and I love dressage, although not competed for a couple of years now. There are days when I'm ok, then there are days I have to push myself to go the yard as my mare always seems to make things better. I'd love to get out competing again.

I have UC and although I see to the horses every day, I always take it day by day to see if I am feeling energetic enough to ride. If I'm in doubt if I'm feeling up to it, I don't go at this time of year. I've just come out of a nasty flare so am taking it extra easy at the moment. I went out to an unaff dressage in august, despite being in the middle of a flare. I was soooo determined to go, and really enjoyed it, but completely knackered myself out by going :)

I didn't really ride last winter as I just had baby horses, but I am intending to not really ride over the winter again. I don't have baby horses this year, and my girly is pretty good so I can just jump on for a trundle as and when I feel like it.

Quite agree thati always feel a bit better when I'm out round the horses, although getting severe cramps while I'm trying to poo pick is not fun. I just try to be sensible and not push myself too much - which is not something that comes to me naturally I have to say :)

I do! I work full time and ride. I find the riding actually helps me to de-stress and therefore reduces my symptoms.

However, i do get very tired and often have to retreat to bed in the afternoons at the weekends. I do compete but I had to stop competing at affiliated level dressage as i found it too stressful and just wore me out too much!! I now compete at RC and unaffilated level and i am really enjoying it.

I've had some serious flair ups and had some operations which have meant i have had to have several months off riding. I couldnt manage without my mum who is a saint! When i am too poorly she will deal with the horses for me.

All in all though i manage pretty well. I think it's a case of taking it one day at a time though!

Thanks for all your kind words and info guys!!! Cheers me up knowing other ppl have it and still keep there passion for horses!! Gud to hear!! I have 2 young craxy welsh d's!! Lol they keep me on my toes! Im on Humira now :) not anymore drugs to try after this i dont think xx
