Hi,

I know there have been posts on building showjumps, but I havent found any on building cross country fences. I was looking at some and the prices are pretty expensive. Does anyone know how to build different fences, or has any experience/pics on building them. There is a step, a hedge and a palisade which lead into different fields. So was just wondering if anyone knows of any cheap fences to make (brush fences etc).

Thanks (:

Our land is quite wet, so the majority of our xc fences are portables which we have made ourselves, which can be moved to better ground or taken in during the winter. If you google "portable xc fences" you will find several sites with gallery pictures of fences and it's quite easy to see how they are constructed.

We use a lot of wooden frame type jumps which you can stuff with birch, or tyres, or feed sacks, or straw bales. You can get logs usually fairly cheaply from sawmills - our local one is happy to let me have tree trunks which for various reasons aren't good enough for him to make into planks, and he delivers them cheaply. I also keep my eyes open for the electric men when they are replacing telegraph poles. If you bung them a few quid they will often leave them for you. You can buy sleepers at garden centres - look for the ones that aren't pretty enough for people's gardens

and you can get them cheaply as well.

Remember to stake everything you build with fence posts (cut to the same level as the jump) to prevent anything rolling if the horse hits it.

If you get very adventurous you can dig ditches (we have them in different sizes) and a water jump (ours is under construction atm, it will have a run in/out and a drop in/step out, and logs at strategic points around it to give several user options!

Anything static has to have firm take offs and landings, and anything constructed (banks, ditches etc) must be properly shored up to prevent collapses.

Threshold picture guide on jump building only costs a fiver and gives some really good advice.
