Hi. So, first hunter trial. I have a question. I understand that if you refuse a single fence three times you’re eliminated. Can you have single refusals on each fence but say jump it the second time and be allowed to continue the course. Or is it three anywhere on the course and you’re out? It’s a 50:60cm jump pre novice.

At affiliated events, fence judges are asked to stop any horse who has had a third refusal on course ie two refusals and then third refusal elemination …and ask them to leave course at a walk…Hunter trials are not affiliated so it depends on the organisers rules…so ask when there….only thing I would say, is be aware of other competitors on course and do not get in their way….

Good luck at the competition, think positive and ride like you mean it!
if you do have 3 refusals, if they do let you continue, make sure you move out of the way of the horse behind if they catch up. It's not fair if they are slowed down due to your issues, also don't follow behind too closely.

I've looked at the course, you're going to sail round. NO negative thoughts are allowed.
lol. He’s never ever done a XC course. And it’s 22 jumps over a large area. Up and down hills. And a water section ! I thought it would be an easier course. There’s little houses and ditches. Hardly slept last night.

Ride positively! Keep your leg on and your eyes up, and remember to have fun!

I've stewarded and fence judged at loads of hunter trails.
Remember the organisers need you to come back so they want you to enjoy it!
We've never pulled someone off course after refusals unless there was a safety concern, we want everyone to get round and finish with a smile 🙂

Tell the starter or whoever is running the warmup area it's your first time and you're a bit nervous, usually they can make sure they give you a bit of extra room.
Remember that once you get going the adrenaline will kick in for you and your horse will find a rhythm.

As said already above, if you do have 3 stops, just ask the fence judge if they're happy for you to continue and keep your head up and your eyes open for riders around you, they may ask you to wait until the person behind has come through, and let you set off again after they've passed.

Whatever happens think positive, head up, leg on and enjoy 🙂
And well done for having the guts to get out there and try!

Enjoy! As others have said, UA tend to be a bit more relaxed. Affiliated you definitely get asked to walk home after cumulative refusals, but on a previous horse I’ve been round a few UA ones where we stopped at almost every fence before deciding it was safe to jump 🙈

So…. Two refusals at the red ‘house’. Jumped all the rest. Went through the water. Hated the arch with the conifers. Three refusals there. And he was getting tired. 22 fences in total. Go pro didn’t work. So zero footage. Just from warm up rung. But, considering many were napping to leave the start box and refusing the second fence which was uphill to the next field, I’m super pleased. Big glass of wine tonight.
