Cruciate ligament

My horse has torn his cruciate ligament. Unfortunately vet diagnosed incorrectly at work and he was initially kept in a small pen. He then received Athramid treatment and after 3 weeks off began two weeks work (mainly walking but also some trotting), this made the injury worse.
Vet then decided to ultrasound and the actually cause of lameness was then found. Vet hopes we can make him sound enough to keep as a pet/low level hack. Has anyone experienced this injury before….any success stories, suggestions gratefully received.

Zero experience with horses I'm afraid, but repairing a torn cruciate ligament for a dog, with carbon fibre sutures, is fairly routine. My inclination would be to ask if a referral to a university hospital might be worth trying.
