Hi all took our Newfy to hydro today she has a hock that has collapsed but she was clipped last week and they noticed a clicking and way it looks is now cruciate.
Now we wouldn't really want to have her operated on again as un sure how long she has with hock. What options are there for treatment other than op also what diagnostics are used or best to use?
She is going to vets Sat but thought id ask

How old is she?

For a big dog like a Newfie, if it is the cruciate (get a referral cos your vet is like a GP, totally non specialist) then an op really is the only way forward if it's a bad partial tear. Then the second one generally goes. Sorry, not what you want to hear. Hope it's not the cruciate!

She is big weights 80kg and by no means fat. Yes i am aware the second usually goes. She will be referred upto Liverpool no doubt although the vet at our practice is an ortho specialist. And in a brand New animal clinic with state of art facilities they maybe able treat there. We prob won't operate only because the likely hood is she won't improve anyway due to the hock she already has a splint she wears for hock stability.

Get a good physio for post-op treatment as it is vital to combat the inevitable muscle atrophy that builds and to keep the neurological pathways open by stimulating the nerve endings via the pads/paws.

Too often the dog becomes a 'tripod' merely due to lack of post-op follow up.
