Hello,

I'm hoping for some positive words - my ridgeback / greyhound has just had suture surgery for his cruciate ligament. He is going to be 8 in a month and was previously super fit. He was referred to a Wey referrals for a TPLO but they decided to fob us of with a suture and bill us for £2K more than out local vets were going to charge for this same surgery that they didn't feel "was the best for a dog of his size and activity". My poor old OH took him for the surgery and got all confused by the vet jargon and signed the line. I'm in tears, the dog is bored out of his mind serving 6 weeks cage rest and the vet is spending my insurance money on christmas presents! Has anyone had a (30kg size) dog back to full working activity from this surgery? Anyone else used this "Wey" place in woking?

My rottie dog has had both cruciates done but had TPLO. He had to spend 8 weeks with little or no exercise but I didn't cage him. I kept him on a lead when out and quiet when in. He is fine now and blasts around with no obvious signs of his traumas.
His right leg didn't heal as well as his left. Vet is perplexed as everything was textbook butit doesn;t seem to bother him.
My ops were around 6 grand in total!! I thank my lucky stars he was insured.

She didn't have surgery, but my SIL's dog damaged her cruciate ligament quite badly last year. The vet advised eight weeks of complete cage rest (and outside on a leash to use the bathroom).

Crow's gait is ever so slightly off at the back, but not so you would notice. She is back to running and swimming and her high energy Collie X self, although she did start limping again in May following a twelve-mile hike. That seemed to be a minor blip, though, and she has been sound for the last six months.

Hmm wishing almost that I didn't have him operated on. Had a Beagle that got better from both his cruciate's snapping, died at 16 and a half having never shown signs of arthiritis

I had a four year old st bernard (90kg!!) who had TPLO was not caged only thing I had to be careful of was the size of the bolt used for the size of dog there was a serious risk of the bone breaking if the dog sliped etc.

Mine was done by the animal medical centre in barnsley - they also have a place in manchester.

By the time he was 6 he did get what my vet considered to be quite bad arthritis however specialist was not horrified and considered the amount normal to good - he led a happy active life up to his death.

Don't know about the surgery your dog had but mine was not a happy chappy and in quite bad pain for the first 3-4 days but after that started to recover quite quickly - not nice to watch at the time though. Hope your dog is better soon

Have PM'ed as thought OP may have not returned to post.

My 45kg rott had the suture repair after her cruciate rupture, and she is doing fab, recovery was about 4 weeks for her.

Glad to here a Rottie has had a good result from the same sort of surgery - gives me hope! The spuddy dog has just had a late onset infection, came home sunday 6 hours after leaving a healthy dog to fiind a dog who I thought was dead at first, rushed to the vets and had to stay in for 24 hours on a drip of drugs and is now back at home and looking much better, he still hasn't put any weight on the operated leg just over 3 weeks on... mind you he has had an infection in it so can't expect anything just yet I guess, just worried that it seems normal for them to be trying to weight bear a bit by this stage, ho hum no turning back now!

have done lateral sutures on lots of big dogs with good results.

i dont have any experience of Wey referrals ortho department. we send everything to Noel Fitzpatrick or Anderson and Abercromby even though Wey is closest.

Thanks star, am still worried that he is yet to weight bear but I'll give him another week or 2 for the infection to clear up then maybe he'll think about using his now puny chicken leg.
