theft...... you get more jail time for theft and robbery these days than murder!

It really angers me too. The sentences for cruelty to animals are generally community based or suspended sentences which doesn't act as any sort of deterrent or send the message that the courts won't tolerate it.
It seems so wrong that acts of cruelty which are often deliberate (as opposed to cruelty by ignorance) and which take place over months are dealt with far more leniently than offences against property for example.
