i just wondered, its a cruelty case if some one dog, child is over weight, does this apply for seriously over weight horses, because we have one at my yard and know one comes to see him and he is really super extremley over weight and is depressed

Yeah, i remember a while back a woman was prosecuted and banned from keeping horses after her 2 horses got horrendously fat. I cant remember if they had lami too though, or they were just on the edge of getting it. I'd deffinately report the owners of the horse on your yard though.

definitely yes - it was specifically mentioned at a combined lecture between my vets, RSPCA and ILPH only this May in connection with the new AW bill.

I'd contact the ILPH

What they do first now is to provide a written sheet to the owner and list out the points of horse care that need attention and a time span is defined for a return visit when improvement is supposed to be apparent. If nothing happens then they may do another form or go down the prosecution route

Rather than contacting an already overworked charity I think yard owner should intervene.
Surely yard rules are being breached if the horse is being neglected ? They are taking money & providing livery, do they have no concern for the welfare of the horse?

Thats a good point, YO should be responsible if horse on their yard its deemed in their care. But there seem to be several postings on here where YO doesn't want to know. If this is the case here then OP needs to find someone who is prepared to intervene for this horse.

Yeh, thats the problem they don't. Which is fine if its DIY livery but from what I read on the forum some YOs offering full livery are not very knowledgeable. Which is scary!

When you see some of the questions posted on here from prospective YOs regarding land management particularly - I think that not only should YOs have equestrian qualifications plus the necessary First Aid qualification but all of them should have some sort of basic course, similar to the first aid course of 4 days, in land management and use of tractors, equipment, etc

yes - some will know this if say farming family but equally some people with parents who are doctors or nurses will know first aid, but the number of yards where the YO haven't got a clue about land management and yet are offering 365 day all year round turnout is ridiculous

there IS no point in turnout if the land is crap, full of worms, weeds and hazards and covered in sh1t

In this weeks (could have been last weeks) H&H the ILPH said that the welfare cases they were investigating lately were more about overfed horses and laminitis that underfed ones - so yes - it does constitute cruelty.
