Crufts 2025

Of course I am biased but the whippet gave a foot perfect show, was the only dog not looking around during the go around and relaxed on the table not being held up. I really liked the JRT too (and not normally a terrier lover) but when the handler picked it off the table by the tail I no longer wanted them to win.

Whippets often carry their tail between their legs and can be happy without loads of expression that the public like (tail wagging, panting, “smiling”, bouncing) often which aren’t signs of happiness at all. Not saying that’s what people on the forum are seeing but my experience owning sighthounds and the publics reactions.

I have done a little showing with mine and when they go in the ring they are in competition mode. Stand like a rock and show off how pretty they are, which exudes confidence in itself. Mine also were standing similarly yesterday by themselves in our garden basking in the sun - , stood out, tail under, ears back, rock still, eyes closed in this case!

Ultimately the judge felt all the animals and saw them in real time and felt it was the best dog of the bunch. They may look rather different in the flesh, how different do people look!

I’ve owned sighthounds for years and my latest is 3/4 whippet , none of mine had their tails so far under them like she did on the table. Her eyes looked vacant to me and although she was beautiful and I’m pleased a sight hound won I still didn’t see a happy dog, no I wasn’t expecting tail wagging and leaping about.. the spaniel was obviously over awed in the ring but eventually started to relax and bought her tail up ..

That whippet is beautiful, behaved perfectly on the table and going round. No it didn’t sparkle but I have one here with enough sparkle for anyone! 😂 . Did anyone see her upside down having a tummy rub? There is plenty of personality there.
I am absolutely not a tiny dog person but I did like the Papillon and would have been happy with that. The cocker was either tired or daunted by the noise. As for the Jack Russell it looked like no Jack Russell ever, surely they should look workmanlike?

I've never seen the jack handler pick her dog up like that in the ring before and she's shown plenty in the UK. Its not allowed under fci rules either which cover Italy.

As for workmanlike - they have to pass their working ability tests in Italy so it will have worked!

One of the principle winners from last years JRT classes, sired by the RBIS Zen is retired as a working terrier with a gamekeeper friend. She's a multi ch of 7 countries!

Sad to see the St Bernard missing from the lineup after failing the vet check. The Dogue de Bordeaux was missing but they had to travel home urgently, nothing wrong with the dog

The commentator said that all the dogs were the best standard, so it would be down to which one had a bit of extra presence. I didn't see that in the judging at all. I do agree the whippet didn't put a foot wrong though.

Whippets do tend to have that slightly switched off look, but give them an open space and most come alive.
Bit of a slip up by the JRT handler to pick up by the tail, maybe she just forgot due to the occasion. It used to be that the tail was docked long enough that a hand could grasp it to pull out of fox earth, don't times change. I really wanted her to win though , she had so much personality.
The pastoral and working groups generally showed well considering they had such a long day, don't know about other breeds but the Lancashire heelers didn't start judging till around 2.30 pm, they must have been so fed up with hanging around. The BoB can't have had much if any rest before going into the group.

Assuming the St Bernard failed on eyes? I saw a ‘hypertype’ St Bernard being taken between halls yesterday, with a very short muzzle and a thick overnose wrinkle like a bulldog, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that was the type the judge had attracted. Hopefully it was an outlier.

I don't know if the dog or b1tch won BOB. I know the dog has passed the vet check previously though and I wouldn't call him exaggerated

When mine went in the terrier Group the vet check in the collecting ring as far as I remember wasn’t much more than a trot up, so I wondered if the St Bernard wasn’t sound? However there might be extra checks for different breeds, no idea!

Interesting regarding the St. Bernard! I would have thought if the winning BOB failed the vet check the runner up could have gone in to group?
