Crufts gundog group

And a nice Show Cocker at that! :p

In the BASC ring today there was a completely clipped out American Cocker, honestly can't see it fitting anything much bigger than a sparrow in it's gob, but I suppose it might hunt ok.... :D
 
I know show labs are built chunkier than workers, but Barney was a show lab and he was always solid muscle, not fat. I hate to see such fat dogs!

I was showing my Large Munsterlander today and his coat was gleeming like silk. Loads of people kept asking 'Wow what have you used on his coat?' - the reply......water :D:p

A lot of people use product on them though.

I too agree the Lab was really fat :(
 
Okay, this thread got me fromt he first with the fat lab comment. However, the short listed dogs in the comment did not match what actually was in the ring last night til I realised that this was in fact, like blackcob says - a zombie thread. However, I agree that the lab was erm....fat! I think Claire Balding tried to comment that it was fat by calling it chunky and then it was quickly commented "large boned". Sorry, I saw fat.
 
I watched the group on TV and posted on my FB that the lab made me feel sick it was so fat. Couldnt watch any more. Could not BELIEVE it when I saw later that Blubber had won the group.

Yes show horses are fat too but both are completely unacceptable and both should be addressed. That dog looked like it was dressed up in a fat suit. Horrible.

In fact I have just emailed the Kennel Club Crufts page with the following
"Im really really not an animal rights nut and quite reluctant to make this contact but I have to say the following.

Does the Kennel Club REALLY contend that the winner of the Gundog group was anything other than a very very fat overweight unhealthy example of a dog?

I switched off the TV in disgust after seeing him paraded and I could not believe it when I saw later that he had been awarded the Group.

I perfectly understand that working labs are leaner than show dogs but that dog was unhealthily overweight and given the situation with weight and dog health in this country what on earth are the judges and the Kennel Club thinking, rewarding such stupid behaviour by owners/breeders.

I am sure mine is not the only email you will recieve on this subject. I support pedigree dog breeds and think the KC is much improved on the health front but this really is a massive own goal.

Must be the telly adding pounds I was standing next to that dog yesterday and he was in lovely condition. very heavy boned but had a waist and would still have scored wellon the fat scale
I have no connection with the owner but I think he well deserved his win he had massive bone and was very chunky all round but not much fat
 
Pretty sad that if this thread was started in 2010 that nothing has improved in 3 years!! I too thought the lab this year looked fat & should have been placed accordingly.

We kept our Gordon fit and lean, he came to the horses and hacked out with me and was walked 3/4 times a day, then when we showed him to was too tall and lanky, compared to the smaller plumper dogs in the ring. Needless to say we stopped showing and just had him as a Pet. I dont get the whole 'working dogs are leaner built' stuff, i thought crufts was supposed to be proper examples in the showring?


I know people with working gundogs and I much prefer the look of them to what parading round crufts, hencewhy i dont watch anymore.
 
Working dogs have separate classes and some would be totally unrecognizable as a labrador at all. These are the gamekeeper dogs. not only are they largely speaking taller and leaner than show labs but they tend to have less bone and snipey heads. My lab is working bred but is short stocky and has a strong boxy head so they come in all shapes and sizes
 
Hi windandrain, I have a working cocker and my friend a working retriever. I was just wondering how it worked as I didn't see any in the working group (but didn't watch all if crufts) and only really the show type in the gundog group. So are u saying they have working dog sections within the gun dog sections?

yes they have a gamekeeper section for all the gun breeds mostly the retrievers but there are some of the others shown, cockers springers field and a few working pointers
