Freezing cold hall 1 , facey judging [ as expected ] , extremely busy , pathetic rule about been kept prisoner till 4 pm , everyone in the queue was complaining about this , and the incident with the woman and man wondering round the benches letting their 2 small children poke unattended sleeping collies , which resulted in one dog really going for the kid and missing his face by cm's , i had a word with the mother [ was'nt rude of abusive ] told them they should'nt be touching unattended dogs. esp as they were sleeping . All of a sudden i'm the villain for upsetting the kid , bloody woman would'nt let it go , was telling everyone i snapped at the child , so my husband then got involved , found the whole incident bizzarre and could'nt get out the place quick enough, still seething this morning, did'nt even watch it on the tv last night , rant over bacon and egg butties ;)

Sorry you didn't enjoy it. We did come briefly to the border collie ring but it was later in the day so missed your class. I have never shown at the NEC, but did so many times in London, where the conditions were far worse. No outside exercise areas at all, and you had to trek your dogs through London streets to get there, and the early removals then were later as I recall. I can see the point that the paying public want to see dogs and if everyone left after their class there wouldn't be many there. However, I have stated before I don't think Crufts is generally a show for dogs, I used to hate it when I was exhibiting. My pups father was there and he actually does seem to enjoy it because he loves meeting people, and the hall wasn't too hot. I didn't notice hall 1 was particularly cold, and have to say I think it is better for the dogs cooler, particularly some of the heavier coated working/pastoral breeds. You will always find idiots who want to prod and poke dogs, which is why whenever I went my dogs were never left unattended for a second, I used to love showing them off to people and letting children fuss them, but it had to be under my terms.
I enjoyed it today as a spectator but as far as exhibiting, there are many shows that I would choose to go to before Crufts.

Most of the staffies who were sleeping had their crates covered up and that kept people away. It's a long day for the dogs though..

Honestly, I was amazed at the number of dogs I saw unattended, and at how freely I, as a normal visitor, could wander between the benches! Had I been a nefarious type, I could have had a number of extremely nice looking dogs away in a moment, and in the crowds I can't imagine anyone would have been any the wiser until it was too late. Most of the dogs looked fairly calm about it all, but I did see one in particular who looked very stressed (panting, drooling heavily and whining) and several more who did not seem too happy. There's no way I would have left a dog of mine alone in those circumstances, to be honest.

You may well get one off the bench but you wouldnt get it out of the NEC you need passes to get each dog out the exit
I enjoyed it as a spectator been a few years with an exhibitor and didnt see much of the show

I was shocked by how many calls there were on the tannoy for people to return to their benches because their dogs were distressed. we wouldnt have dreamt of leaving ours alone on his bench but then again we care about him. we just took it in turns to sit with him. the dog next to us was left in its crate with no blanket or anything while its owners went awol, weed in its crate and was left sitting in it for another half hour while all 4 people with it went for a look round the show. if you dont want to look after your dog go without it imo

slightly off piste here but a friend who shows told me that speaking to some of the foreign owners, their dogs werent even checked coming into the country, paperwork etc! If this is true, what about all the fuss about rabies, etc?

I was huffing and puffing about this at my curry meet up on sat-then yesterday I noted that Dispatches this eve is all about designer dogs & covers the rabies/uk aspect..should make interesting, if scary watching after what you've just said..lets face it..if we're eating horse meat unknowingly..with all the docs/passports & systems in place money will still make it possible to get a dog thru somehow or other..its only a matter of time

My own collie was with us every second , no way would i of left him alone , these collies opposite me were nice and relaxed been left and were fast asleep , parents need to educate their kids not to touch strange dogs, the mother said the dog was nasty and should'nt be at the show

This is really interesting as we are planning a trip back to the UK this year with our whippet. We were told that they have to have their rabies vaccination (already done) and the tag you are given at the time has to be shown on their collar at all times. In addition you have to get a vet to give them a tapeworm tablet 1-4 days before travel and these will be checked on your pet passport. To be honest, I would be quite worried if these things weren't checked :s

Having said that, I wouldn't think that those travelling for the likes of Crufts would try and travel without all the relevant checks and paperwork in place.

all passes were checked on us getting ours out... NO no they wasnt.... i had two afghan hounds and a great dane, with 3 of us with 1 each.. i handed the man ONE pass for the dane.. and showed him ONE of my DD passes... so one, wasnt checked... I DO NOT leave my dogs... i do bench my dane at champ shows and she would be left for a Few mins... but not now.....

Facy judging dont even get my started.... my dog did get a Place but it was NOT where she should of been, beaten by a dog with Awful movement.. arghhhhh.....

yes people just Poking the dogs But im ok as all 3 of mine are fine, but i would worry if it was like my small dogs, as they arnt in to getting poked about...

all in all i will STILL go, because i still enjoy showing as only been doing it 4 years... and shes qualified every year. But i am getting a bit more peed off with the full show world with just how facy the judges are, and how Greedy the KC is with entry fees ect ect.. sake you dont even get decent Freebies now, the Info pack was full of Car stuff.. WTF...

Ok... iv rabbled on.. lol. ill stop now..

Thats worrying Asif, would have hoped they would have been very strict checking passes. I don't know how much entry fees were, but the programmes were £8, I was just about to pay when I discovered that the catalogue was another £8! So we didn't bother, just looked at the Crufts page on our phones to find out where trade stands etc were.;)

well I loved it, my first time showing at Crufts and I was very impressed. We were in hall one on Thursday, it was a good temp. THe judging was good, a very knowledgeable fair judge who actually saw through all the primping that some dogs had. I did not leave my dog on the bench, I took him with me round the halls as I wanted a bouyancy aid fitted to him and a new collar and he had a ball. He loved meeting and greeting, he does never do stressed and just takes everything in his stride. People asked if they could cuddle him, no one touched him without asking me. When it got busy I just picked him up and carried him. he is a bedlington so i can do that with ease.

As to the leaving a 4, well that was no problem at all. I think it actually said 4.30 on my documentation so 4 was a bonus. I knew when I went that I would have to have him there till then so no issue. We queued up to leave at 4 and were in the car and at the car park exit by 4.15. As a paying member of the public I would be pretty annoyed if all the dogs had left early, they have paid to see the dogs, not empty cages and halls
