crufts

I'm there on Thursday to meet Roscoe's dad's breeder for last minute grooming and ringcraft advice as he has his first show next week. And for shopping, obviously. :)

Tiva and Lily are both entered on Thursday but Lily has just come into season so she is stopping at home. About to give tiva her bath 😜
Flatcoats are in hall 4 this year so if anyone fancies a flatcoat hug and lick come and see us. Tiva's registered name is Blacktoft quickstep of stainbaze

Good luck satinbaze. I wont be there but I own two flatcoats and am a society member, so follow the results.
Also good luck to anyone else competing whatever your favorite breed is.

If we consider the Working Sector, do we lose sight of the fact that rarely if ever, are those breeds which are on show and were designed to work, ever actually do so?

Working Cockers? Surely, they're not serious! :D

Considering blackcob's preferred breed, whilst those which are shown are probably and still, closely related to those which work, time will show that the show bench will apply their own agenda and eradicate any semblance of 'Fit for purpose'. If b/c considers me to be wrong, then I'll add that it's only a matter of time, as it has been with all work-bred breeds.

There are certainly extant those who show GSDs who demand that a most certain work-ethic be presented to support breed examples. I applaud such moves as they return the ethos of breeding to its roots.

Alec.

Lovely to see Flattie fans! My two boy's Dad is there - you probably know him and his lovely owner - Broomsward Hugo Boss by Gemswin! I think she's showing 9 in total.

Oh, and Alec btw Hugo does work. Goes out beating regularly :-)

Interestingly I was talking to someone with a FT ch Lab last week and it did look like a Lab not a scrawny, leggy lab cross as are often seen in the field. I suggested he put a motion forward that field labs could get their title upgraded to full Ch by being able to be placed at a champ show. Sh champions can do a working test to gain a full title so it would help if this were reciprocated. It may help keep some resemblence between different factions of a breed. My breeds can do teh job they were originally bred for and altough I don't work I have had pups from teh same litter go ot show & working homes. Some time ago we organised an earthdog trial ( using dead bunnies as we are not allowed caged rats as in the USA) at a fun day companion show and the overall winner was a mini wire dachs that was there for teh eye testing - he later became a show champion.

Indeed, I'm there to learn how to exhibit the plump, hairy show cocker that mum has acquired. He will never work a day in his life, I admit it!

The vast majority of the Siberians in the ring this weekend will be of the UK sprint racing type (I hesitate to label them that, there should be no difference in type, alas there already is) and coming straight off the back of the racing season. I await the annual Facebook slagging-off from the American show type exhibitors who prefer the short-legged, padded-muzzled, brushed-up plush version that are are indistinguishable from one another as they show a definite preference for coat colour (wrong, wrong, wrong). They refer to our racing bred dogs as stringy mutts.

Hey, where's the poodle love?!

PS, Alec - this one "works" if you call bouncing after a ball ad nauseum working

Sorry BC but I have a childish desire to point and laugh whenever I see anyone planning to show a spaniel :p I blame my mother :p

Good luck to everyone competing at Crufts, I hate it with a passion but I know how important it is, so I really hope you do well - particularly Satinblaze with flatcoats, I have been a fan since 1980 (Shargleam Blackcap anyone? :) )

You would be right to laugh, it's not going very well and I have no idea what I'm doing. She couldn't have bought a sibe puppy, oh no... :p

Will anyone else be around on Saturday?

I'll got three going.

And as you know alec, fit for function is close to my heart. It's illegal for mine to do their job in this country, but I assure you they are very capable ;)

Nothing entered this year but doing Discover dogs for two hound breeds.
Just because the purpose of a breed no longer exists or is illegal doesn't mean they wouldn't be capable of performing.

Having only been to Crufts once many year ago, and not terribly up on things, why are dogs that were in working section now called pastoral, and what does that mean exactly, I think dalmations are pastoral now ?

ETA and the best dogs there and should be champion are the Gordon Setters, though they never get anywhere (IMHO only)
