Hi all,
Since we've had the snow, my mare, who's turned out 24/7, has started to get crumbly frogs and heals. I was wondering if it could be linked to the frozen conditions? or just a coincidence. She still has plenty of frog left but some of it has flaked away and she has a crack that has now appeared on the back of her hoof. It isn't really deep and doesn't seem to be causing her discomfort but i'm not sure what to do about it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i've not experienced this before.
I have been washing out her feet and spraying the crack with purple spray just in case but not sure if it's helping or if i'm just shooting in the dark so to speak

Hopefully it's just the natural growth of the frog tissue which can start to look tatty just like the surface of their chestnuts can. As OCYC says, your farrier can cut it back for you if that's all it is. In the event that the farrier finds something else eg old abscess or god knows what, he'll be the best one to advise. In the meantime, purple spray won't hurt at all and will keep any potential nasties at bay until you knw all is well x

thanks for your replies. I don't think it's an abscess as it's on all 4 feet. It's as if her frogs froze in the snow and have thawed out and gone all soft and flakey. Strange. Have got farrier out this week so will see what he says

It could be the frogs shedding however the crack you mentioned is indicative of thrush, is the crack at the back of the frog running up intowards the heel bulbs?

Have the hooves been mucky/gungy or smelly at all?

Your farrier should be able to tell you in the meantime nothing wrong with getting the purple spray right down in there just in case.
