After his last couple of graded ride my arab has had really sore armpits from right inside his armpit to along the front of the girth. They're very tender and take a week or so and loads of sudocrem to heal up. They appear to be crusty scabs which look a bit like rain scald. Horse is a chestnut with quite sensitive skin.

I already use a chafe-less girth and sheepskin girth sleeve. Any suggestions how to stop it happening, please?

I would ask this on triathlon or.running forums. It sounds like sweat chafing. First thoughts are tons of vase line, reapplied at check points, or talc, but I think the latter would soon turn to paste on an endurance horse!

Mine had this, it was from sweat. I used Equine America Fungatrol cream, for mud fever which healed it up. Wash and dry horse after work.

Try Keratex mud fever powder (or some other make, but deffo powder) sprinkled on. Worked a treat for me and no sticky armpits.

Thanks for the replies.

How well are you washing the horse off after you've finished? And what are you using?

Properly, I think. Sometimes with some shampoo of my friend's and sometimes with that peppermint none rinse stuff. They're there when I get off, before I've even untacked and washed him off. The skin looks all rough and sore.

Event grease ?? Lanacane ... Sounds crazy but a bit of ky jelly . Anything that stops friction should help and ky is for 'sensitive ' areas ;)

Lubricant was my first idea, and that's what I put on him for the last fun ride I did. It tested my embarrassment tolerance wandering round with the Durex stuff, lol. I'm not sure about vasaline, its a bit sticky, could it block the sweating? I will try asking some runners for ideas, thanks everyone.

ETA Thanks fat piggy, I'll try that then.

If that does not work my lad had behind the elbow crusts constantly, tried everything, many girths, many sleeves, many potions...... Bought a Fairfax and voilà, the problem has gone.

Just check as well that this is not sarcoids as my grey horse has this in the same place but the lady who clipped hom though that it was sarcoids. Hope that this is wrong! x

Have you tried a girth that is cut away from the elbows? I use a Kentaur one on my Arab as he has a forward girth groove and really gives him more freedom and no rubs, they are about £90 but I think so worth it.
