Saved up forever for a super little lorry and have now found it's been clocked. Only found out by looking up MOT on VOSA website, but didn't get MOT 'til I'd handed over my hand earned cash. I'm asking for compensation, if I ever sell it I'll have to tell correct mileage + I'm now having to spend another £500 having a cam belt fitted and having it serviced to be on the safe side. Informed Trading Standards, but that won't help me get any compensation. Anyone else been done!
 
Is this a dealer or a private sale? What did trading standards say. I presume you still have the advert?
 
Dealer(would love to post who but can't) so I hope I have some comeback when it goes to court. I was bouncing off the walls when I first got it, It is fab, but it's all been spoilt now.
 
Is it a 7.5t? I found most of them have mileage that isnt right, mainly as tacho heads are replaced, so you the mileage isnt genuine. Nearly all have had a former life as a parcel truck or similar, so when you see 'only done 90k', then its obviously wrong. I was told time and time again by people in the know to ignore the mileage on a 7.5t as they go forever.

If its a 3,5t then sorry I dont know anything about them and I hop you get it sorted. Good luck.
 
Thanks for your response - unfortunately it's a 3.5ton! I know they last along time - but it's not what I paid for I feel really cheated.
 
Poor you. I really hope you get it sorted.
It is so unfair. Is there a massive difference in mileage? I take it you contacted the dealer but he doesnt want to know.

I feel for you. I put a deposit down, £1000 on a lovely 3.5t wagon. Got home and checked it and it had been clocked by 100,000 miles!!! Called him and he denied all knowledge except it also told us when it had been last checked and it was when he still had it. Cancelled the cheque right away. Luckily it only cost me £7 to cancel the cheque. B*stards!!
 
Poor you... all that saving to feel so let down. I hope that you can get this all sorted out.

May I just ask, in case any clever people know, is there anywhere you can check the mileage for a 7.5 ton?

Aparantly not :(:( Not fair is it :(
If you open the tacho though, it has stickers on it that show mileage and date. I went to view a wagon with 130000km on it but when the tacho head was opened it shown somat like 330000km and a date. I think this means the tacho was changed on that date and the mileage is the mileage shown on the sticker in the previous tacho, so the lorry I viewed reallly had 460000km! I think this is right :confused:

Theres no mileage on a 7.5t MOT. I thought this was odd at first but its the same on both the lorries Ive owned
 
Can't check MOT's for 7.5 ton on DVLA, I guess because it's a plate not an MOT... and no, mileage not recorded for them either. It's something I never thought about when I bought mine - interesting that there is no official place to check...
 
Sorry to sound dim but I'm looking to buy a lorry next year sometime and was wondering what it means for the lorry to be clocked?

Probably a right numpty question. :o
 
i have just sold a 3.5t lorry that had ridiculously low mileage for the year. It was obvious it has either gone around the clock once (or even twice) or has had the mileage reduced but i still had loads of interest and sold to the first viewer.

If you have the work done i wouldnt worry then, just chase up the company you bought from to refund you the amount you have paid to have it put right.
 
Regardless of the mileage,changing the cam belt on a new lorry is a good policy. So you havent really lost anything there.What was the mileage given in the advert and what do you reckon it has actualy done?

Or the speedo broke and was replaced. No reason to suspect foul play .
 
I found out that my last 3.5t had been clocked - by a lot - I found out a few days after I got it home and did what the OP had done and checked on www.mot.gov.uk. I found out that it had gone in one day for an MOT and failed with 157000 on the clock and then miraculously gone in a couple of days later and passed with 93000 on.....amazing!!
When I looked back through the MOT history, it was clear that it probably wasn't the first time that it had been clocked either. I contacted the seller who was a dealer, but what a battle I had trying to get him to replace it. I contacted trading standards who were as much use as a chocolate fireguard (although I do believe they visited the dealer after the saga to check ALL his vehicles out), VOSA were a waste of time and theen the day that I was returning it to the dealer, it broke down - when I say broke down, it broke down never to be fixed again. I got the recovery company to load it up and return it to the dealer and phoned him to let him know what was happening. He initially refused to exchange it for the other vehicle and became abusive. I gave him three options
1: A full refund in cash
2:Exchange for the replacement vehicle - as arranged
3: "I suggest you get yourself a good lawyer, because the next time I see you it will be in court".

When we arrived, he exchanged the vehicle for the newer one as arranged. I wonder if the OP now has this old vehicle??

No not a numpty question.. what it means is the speedo/ odometer has been changed either because the speedo broke and was replaced or because someone has commited mileage fraud by altering the true mileage
so it shows less than its actualy done sadly this is fairly common as the average joe or joanna thinks less miles means its in better condition!!! which is Bovine scatter give me a well serviced 100k over a negleted 30 k one any day, dont worry about miles worry instead about condition and how it runs if something is going well its most likely to be fine for the little use it will get as a average horse box untill the bodywork falls of which is what I expect will be the fate of most 3.5 ton boxes ... howerver if you are sold something that is claimed to be genuine and it isnt then thats wrong whether you can get anything done is another matter I guess you would have to prove the seller has done the fiddling or knew it wasnt x miles on it and sold it as corect and true unless he is a dealer then he should offer some money back or take it back for a refund ...

This is one reason (again) why horsey folk are their own worst enemy when playing 'lorries'. Any vehicle over 7.5tonne should have it's tacho calibrated every two years, the company who do it issue a certificate, and these form part of the 'service history' of a goods vehicle. But as horseboxes are 'not goods vehicles' unless caught, it's highly unlikely that they get done.
Sorry to hear about your 3.5t OP but there are many reasons why the mileage may be different so before you go 'bouncing off the walls' perhaps ask a couple of relevant questions?

Thanks that does make a lot of sense will keep it in mind when looking. It's only so I don't need to take another test to take myself to shows. :p

only if the fleet that owned
it kept records, most are well serviced as they have to go for a safety check every six weeks but its rare that the mileage is logged .. if its been on parcel or freight work assume about 100,000km a year average, council trucks much less but can be more hammered, then there are furniture and carpet and removal/local delivery type trucks oftern very tidy and do lower mileage, then horse box from new could be genuinely very low mileage but may well be in worse condition than a well maitained ex fleet truck... dont worry about mileage get them checked by a mecanic you will be fine....

The mileage the dealer told me was 71.000. I've since traced it back to 120,000 and there is still 14months mileage missing!! There is no legitimate reason, the dealer actually old me the mileage,and I've traced previous owners. It is illegal to sell a vehicle without telling the purchaser the mileage is incorrect- gosh I must say that in my sleep now!
 
Question like what? He sold me a vehicle with 71,000 miles on, I've traced it back so far to 120,000 with still 14 months missing. His ad says 25 years selling good clean quality vehicles. ok so I've been had - it's still illegal what he's done!
 
i own a horsebox company and often get people calling up enquiring about horseboxes when we say the mileage (usually between 150-300k - depending on the vehicle type & size) people sound shocked....... but thats normal for a commercial vehicle ....they are designed to do work. and the company who owned the van/lorry before are not going to sell it when its hardly done any work.

We only buy from finance companies who have strict maintance 6 weekly inspections. I would sure prefer to buy a vehicle that i know has been maintained and may show a higher mileage than one that has an un-believable low amount of mileage!

REMEMBER A VAN OR LORRY MAIN POINT OF WORK IS TRAVELLING - daily!! ......why would most large companies who own them sell a vehicle that hasnt done any work? imgaine a vehicle doing 8 hours day 5 days a week, for 3 years how much miles do you reckon will go on the clock?

p.s - sorry you got your leg lifted. who ever clocked it is in for some big trouble.
 
Thanks it makes me feel a little better that most trucks have reasonable high mileage - managed to trace previous service history and it has been well maintained. That apart I still havn't got what I paid for and he's made some good money out of me.
 
I wouldn't panic unduly if the mileage is rather higher than you thought. Diesel engines are designed to do huge mileages - the body will probably collapse before the engine does! It usually means it has spent its life on the motorway which is the very best environment for any engine - minimum gear changes, braking and the oil really gets around the system. I recently changed my car which was a 51 plate Toyota Yaris, 1 litre petrol engine. It had 166K miles on it!!!!!!!! Amazingly, the only parts I'd ever changed were the nearside front shock absorber, the throttle cable and the week before I part-exed it, the back box on the exhaust. Everything else including the clutch was original. It is now being used by the little local garage as their courtesy car.
 
Thanks for that, slightly more comforting, however that's not what I paid for and the dealers still walked off with wads of my hard earned cash!
