CS-energy/turnout/musings:brainstorm please!

I feed mine Allen and page power and performance, oats and comp mix, they also have beet and hi fi. I know its a lot but it does the job, energy without silliness

a completely different thought.. would it be worth getting your forage analysed to see what is lacking?

I can't get my hay analysed as it comes from different places but I put my guys on a forage balancer and the change in them has been amazing :P they have plenty of energy and look great. i just feed this along with speedibeet and linseed

I think i Would struggle to get more re leve in him by virtue of only being able to get three feeds a day in to him,and that volume of re leve plus the Alfa a , would need splitting down to four I think????? Correct me if wrong :)

Haulage wise I'm lucky to be sponsored by my hay man so changing wouldn't be an option and I'm also wary in as much as very rich is usually very acidic and not good on tummies????

Will go and read up on peas and oats......thanks all.

Fairly sure it's not just tension energy as he can be hotted up but then drop behind me.

Releve has a lot of dried up sugar beet ( so its not like your normal mix- you Can feed more of it) and the Alfa A is just a type of fibre basically so it doesnt matter if he gets lots of that in addition to his feed- why not add the Alfa to his eve feed then he can spend a couple of hours munching through it throughout the eve/ night, then he can have an extra scoop or 2 of the Releve at lunch time?
( assuming that I've read it right- in that he was only getting Alfa at lunch)
If you were going to try adding peas/oats etc anyway why not just up the Releve instead? It does seem to fizz them up well when they are fed more of it!

I feed my tb cavalor. He gets pianissimo twice daily and mix and mash for his lunch. He is supplemented with the muscle force and he looks brilliant on it. He doesn't need it at the moment as is in v light work but the high energy feed they manufacture sound quite good- super force is supposed to be a good cavalor feed for horses that need short bursts of energy for show jumping, etc or the endurix which is what my guy will go onto for eventing. The only thing I find is that the sugar and starch content is really high- touch wood ulcers aren't an issue for my horse but the high % did make me wonder if he would blow his top.

Haven't read all the replies but I find Red Mills full Fat Soya is great for maintaining weight as its high protein & high oil.

Also if feeding oats you need black oats not the white oats which are useless and will just be feeding the birds!! Think you will need to source from Scotland for decent black oats.

Ultra grass is good too lightly coated in oil, and any grass/chaff type feeds can be fed pretty much ad-lib, as these are digested in the hind gut, like grass &hay etc.

I haven't read the replies, but havens slobber mash is brilliant. It's transformed both my two, put weight on, but not lost any sparkle. They look great on it too, my boys been off two months after an op, and you cannot tell to look at him at all.

Hi
I've got my ex racer on Nupafeed staying power which seems to be really helping his energy levels. Not sure whether it would help your boy at all but might be worth a chat to the guys at nupafeed-they are really helpful!

If I recall correctly Havens Slobbermash is very high in starch and I'd be eeekkk about feeding it to a horse prone to ulcers!

it is, but equally a fair few people i know have fed it to ulcery horses with zero issues, Havens say its to do with how the feed is manufactured, the starch is more easily digested????? (Cavalor say the same about their feeds BTW and i know some top top dressage people in the US who swear by it and have no ulcer issues throughout a whole barn of horses so.....)

have heard SO much good stuff from some very very good/picky/well informed/competitive etc etc people that im willing to try it, ill know in 24hours if it isnt agreeing with him.

Elliefiz-do you buy your Cavalor online?

good point re increasing the re-leve, it looks a massive feed because i soak it and it swells but i guess dry weight its not *that* much..... he could have 1 scoop AM, 1/2 scoop re leve and 1 alfa at lunch and then 2 scoops plus alfa for tea.

lots to think about guys, thank you.

anyone else tried the nupafeed staying power?

to totally throw a spanner in the works, my 17.2 was like this before his injury and was always slightly overweight and no way near as fit as i should have had him (hindsight is a wonderful thing) i fed him on Pure feed racing feed but all this seemed to do in the long term was give him more energy to fight back against me getting him to go forward!

Anyway during 1st stage of box rest he put on even more weight due to feeding him to excess to keep him quiet and peaceful! When i sent him away for rehab he went on a huge diet and fitness plan (obviously slowly over time due to injury recovery) and now he is a different horse!

I used to jump him and he used to literally slow down to nothing before a fence and then struggle to haul himself over, and now i can get his canter nice and forward and then approach a jump.

Lots has changed with him as well as his fitness, and now he is only on Pure Feed Fibre Balance and this is more than enough energy for him now he is fitter and healthier. Obviously i dont know what fitness or weight your horse is but looking back that was a major problem with mine!

Other contributory factors could be that he needed a break, he has grown up (turning 7 this time) and almost finished growing, i have a different trainer etc who makes me ride him more positively and have worked on his trot and canter and getting him more engaged behind.

Sorry if this is no help at all but i tried everything for energy for mine, propell, all the heating mixes, oils, racehorse feed and nothing worked long term

I would give 3 feeds of the re-leve and put the alfalfa in a separate bucket and feed alongside at some point. The alfalfa is forage, so it doesn't qualify for the small feeds rule.

One of the Topspec horror stories may have been mine - the super conditioning flakes completely destroyed my TB's feet... a year on and they're still not back to how they were before :(. He wasn't in so much work as yours, though, so you may find them better tolerated.

would absolutely agree with this - changed the ponies onto a forage balancer rather than more general vits and mins formulation and the difference in energy (and cheekiness!) has been astounding. Was a real 'lightbulb' moment when we twigged that it was the mineral ratios that needed to be changed rather than the amounts/type of grub.
