Our lovely ten year old beagle is being scanned this afternoon due to a severe nasal/respiratory problem which initially started off as reverse sneezing but has now progressed into a very debilitating condition where here spark for life has all but dissapeared and her quality of life is not great. She gets exhausted as she is up all night snorting and spluttering and rarely has undisturbed sleep. We are hoping that the problem is a foreign body in her nasal passage which would be the best case scanario. However due to her age and quickly deteriorating illnes the vet is concerned that she has a tumour. It could also be that she had rhinnitis but unfortunately she has been treated with all the possible drugs for this condition that she could have been including a course of steriods and nothing seems to have helped, so if she does have this condition it means monitoring and trying to prevent whatever it is (and it could be thousands of possibilities) from irritating her nasal passages, which we have found impossible up to now. Very sadly Candy is not insured and my partner has had to incur the costs himself. So far they have been about £950-£1000 and this afternoon could cost between £700 and £1200 dependant on whether she requires sedative or GA.
I really feel at this stage that there will be no happy ending and we will be forced into a situation that we don't wish to be in, where we have a dog that could end up costing us thousands (that we do not have) in the hope that she will be cured (of which there are no guarantees).
I guess the point of this post is twofold. One is to ask you all to please send us your very best good luck vibes. We hope to find out the result of the CT scan either this afternoon or tommorow morning. the other point of the post is that people have pets that are not insured, please think twice. To be forced into a position where you have no choice but to have your pet put down due to lack of funds in a situation no body would wish to be in, least of all us. x
