Cumbrian heavy horses

That's a shame - poor writing and OTT personal opinions do more to put me off a company ;) A short statement on their rules would have done - surely their personal account would be a more appropriate place for that essay :(

I can understand their point...however, surely a "our weight limit is X, unfortunately we cannot accept people over this as it can cause damage to the horses' backs" would do the trick.

Also, use of "loose" instead of "lose" (I'm not pedantic, honest!)

I completely agree. But myself if I was going to ride I would want a big 17-18hh horse to feel safe enough lol.

The riding schools near us have a weight limit of 13 stone, now my hubby is 13.7, but soo slim and fit, so he couldn't ride :-/

Oh dear its not at all professional is it. Her rant about barefoot horses is annoying too. She sounds just like one of them know it all horse women who know so much there's nothing more for them to learn. Think I'll give that place a miss!

To be honest I respect them for being to up front and blunt. Nothing written there is untrue. I could happily stand to lose at least 2 stone but having just had a baby I have other priorities. No excuses or justifications I just need to eat less and exercise more. I'm 5'11" and weigh just shy of 13 stone, in my opinion I'm too heavy for riding at the moment. Good for them got explaining their policy.

Oh dear. While I agree with her opinion, it would certainly put me off going because I get the feeling that the writer is OTT on more issues than just weight.

And I've banned OH from riding the cob until he loses weight but not as bluntly as this lady.

I agree, it's up to her what weight limit she imposes, they're her horses, but as a company, this comes across poorly and is a rant, not a company ethic. Surely this weight excludes a lot of well built blokes?

Also her horses her rules fair enough, but what if someone has a medical problem for being overweight? Just reading there Facebook and so I e commented that her husband tried booking a trip for her but because she's 5"3 and 15 stone they won't take her, but if she was 6ft they would! She's an experienced rider too.

I don't think horses care whether people have a medical reason for overweight - mine certainly don't! They do appreciate that I try to keep my weight within reasonable limits though!

This is too bad that she is portraying herself as rude and unprofessional as I previously only heard good things about this company ....

I totally agree with her, why on earth should she put up with obese tourists that just fancy a ride. 16 stone is generous in my opinion, and I agreed with every word she said.

I dont think anyone disagrees about her weight policy. I think its great she is looking out for her horses but the ranting is putting off people who actually want to come and see her horses. Its certainly put me off going.

Nice little quote from her- 'Horses have been shod for centuries for a good reason, as trees have been put in saddles for centuries for good reason. You MIGHT get away with fronts only if you have miles of off road and you ride twice a week. otherwise you will have a lame horse in a matter of days.'

Same, I agreed with her post about the weight of riders!
Every horse should carry no more than 20% of their weight and be fit and healthy themselves.

I agree with her weight, but I'd prefer a bigger rider on "my horse" that knows what there doing, and can spread there weight evenly, then someone smaller who has no idea, falls off, bounces around ect!

Well I doubt very much that she will be getting riders that know what they are doing at her establishment. They will be fatties with beards most likely.

I went a while ago. I didn't enjoy it fully but the people I rode with (I went alone) had over exaggerated their experience and one of them had a fall. I'm a bit of a nervous rider so underestimated and ride leader was v encouraging of my seat and hands and picked the right horse for me. Am not a lightweight and they were happy to take me, I spoke to them over the phone about my experience etc

On a blog/facebook type of thing I'm not of the opinion that her post is excessive these days.

The CEO of my very large multinational writes (ghost writes I suspect) all sorts of rubbish in his on-line 'diary'.

And, as many have said - she is doing absolutely the right thing for her horses. I'm afraid that well-built blokes/fatties/rugby players/the medically obese/whatever don't have any right to ride. There is, presumably, the option of elephants or camels for them... (NB I don;t know much about riding either so if there are any experts around (particularly in camel dressage/elephant polo with pictures!) then feel free to correct me!)

It wasnt a diary. It was on there public page for there business.

Been there and done it. I am a very nervous rider and have injuries to deal with but i felt totaly at ease and had a fantastic ride. I wish i could ride there everyday. Fantastic horses and a yard ran very professionaly. Great lady and brilliant staff. Her horses, her yard, her rules and it works!
