Cumbrian Heavy Horses

I had a fantastic four-hour beach ride with this company the other day, so thought I'd post to recommend them if you're up Lake District way on holiday.

I rode the appropriately-named Big Mac, who was forward, safe, and extremely responsive, albeit to very basic aids. (You're not getting a shoulder-fore out of him, but you get a trot or a canter as soon as you ask, and he'll come down a gear just as easily.) Horses are fit, in good condition, and the staff are careful to have a good chat with you beforehand and match you with an appropriate horse.

Ignore my gurning great grin - I was having a very good time!

I think they said he's 18.2hh. My share horse is 16.3hh, so most of the horses seemed a normal sort of height to me. And then Mac came off the lorry!

I went on a three day holiday for my birthday last year! I rode a horse called Miracle and had a brilliant time. I would totally recommend them

I used to ride up there fairly regularly but then I fell so much in love with it that I ended up buying one off them and I've never looked back! My boy was very similar to ride to what you describe: big (18.1hh), VERY responsive and straightforward (I rode quite a few and they were pretty much all like that with varying degrees of sharpness) but the suppleness took a while to teach.

Jennie, sadly Lugs passed away a few years ago, a much loved member of the team. My hubby always said if he retired he'd bring him home and have him as his own!

They are fab. Dan and I had a two hour hack (Dan hadn't been on a horse for over 20 years) and we both absolutely loved it. Great horses and great people.
