I wondered what Cumwhinton intro is like? I have been here many years ago to do Pre Novice and the Novice but can not remember and everything seems soo much bigger now!! ;) Im debating whether its worth missing pimms and gin drinking at the Highland Show for.

It's nice! Pictures on my FB page of last years course.
Fence 2 is a biggish hedge with a drop that a few got unseated at last year. There was a corner as fence 5 but it rides really well and is not big. Water is a nice run in and step out. There was a half coffin as fence 13 with box fence in and decent sized ditch.
Definitely worth missing spectating at RHS to compete ;)

Are there any fences spooky ie lots of flowers or out of the ordinary fences? I need a ncie course to get my horse going, its not the height just the dressing of fences mainly! What was the SJ like? Thanks

Fence 2 is apparently going to be different this year - not sure what though! The course is well dressed - first year it ran there were lots of problems with horses spooking at the wooden llamas but everyone seems used to them now! Its quite a twisty course but not big. Showjumping is quite bright and can be quite a small arena. Nice local, friendly event. Dressage area is nice and quiet - near XC fences 2 and 3 in collecting ring but doesn't seem to cause too many problems.

Horsey4 - just seen your very similar questions!! Cumwhinton was well known for dressing the XC fences with wooden animals - chickens on top of corners, the llama pen (upright palisades with wooden llamas to the side of the fences which proved to be very spooky). Other fences have a lot of flowers, bales of straw etc, oh and the water jump has a sleeping crocodile in it!! Don't worry - you would have to make quite an effort to jump it - check out the Cumwhinton website as I'm sure there is a photo of a competitor jumping it but he did have to make a big deviation to do it!! It is nowhere near your line in and out of water for any of the classes. I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary now, but the first year it ran it did cause a bit of concern (riders, not horses interestingly!).

Most of the things soupdragon mentions are well out the way of the fence and you do not even notice them :) I would say it is only an averagely dressed course not OTT with some nice natural looking fences in there too. A nice mix :)
