I need to buy a curb chain for my kimblewick bit but not sure whether I need a single chain, double chain, elastic or leather as I have never used a bit with a curb chain before now. What do you think? Thanks.

has your horse ever worn a curb chain before?

If not then i'd be inclinded to go with a leather one to begin with and if still extra curb pressure needed then try a double link chain.

I wouldnt use a elastic one as i think defets the object of having a curb as it just stretches. Similarly i think that a single chain is to fine and could cause injury, at least the double chain when fitted correctly will lay flat.

Yes, he used to wear a Pelham with his previous owner. I tried to be clever and have been using a bit with a lozenge, as to look at him you wouldn't believe he could tank off anywhere but I haven't much control when we're heading for home and I can see why he was in a Pelham previously.

As Sammiea says, it's just a case of try a few & see.

I was warned off elastic curbs partly because they don't have a proper effect but also because they can allow the bit to rotate too far.

I tried a leather one first of all for Jim but it was too bulky for his liking & he didn't settle happily in it, likewise a chain with a cover. He seems best with a single link curb fitted fairly snugly, though he tolerates a double link too.

If you do go for a chain be very careful to make sure it lays flat - it sounds obvious but all too often it doesn't happen.

As sammiea says the curb chain should lie flat. You can get it to do this by rotating it between fore finger and thumb so it lays flat against the coat, and make sure you secure it with a lip strap (so many people don't use lip straps) so the chain bounces and moves out of position continually.

applecart14 - i totally agree with the lip strap comment but as OP said was for a kimblewick i didnt mention this as as far as i'm aware there isnt anywhere to fix a lip strap on a kimblewick?
